About the Author
G. W. F. Hegel (1770-1831) is one of the great figures in the history of Western thought, and the most important philosopher of his time. He spent his life in his native Germany, elaborating an enormously ambitious and broad-ranging philosophical system which has exerted a continuing influence on European and Anglo-American philosophy. Sir Malcolm Knox was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of St Andrews from 1936 to 1953, and then Principal of that university until 1966. He published translations of many of Hegel's philosophical, theological, and political writings. He died in 1980.

Not since Aristotle has Philosophy so Illuminated Fine Art

It is not every century that is so fortunate to receive a vision of Fine Art that illuminates the foundations of Art and what Art means for the human species. Hegel first distinguishes between ordinary Aesthetics and his notion of Fine Art, that is, Human Creativity. Nature can be Aesthetic, but only Humans create Fine Art, and it is Fine Art that Hegel wishes to explore in this masterpiece.
In great detail, Hegel explains why his concept of Spiritual Freedom is central to Art, just as it is central to Politics, to Religion, to Free Thinking and to Science. Fine Art is distinguished by its direct and personal appeal. A human hand fashions a single object with such care, devotion, skill and imagination that it may be treasured by millions for centuries. This is no act of conditioned reflexes, but an act of profound Freedom and awareness of Spiritual reality.
The key to Art, for Hegel, is always the Spirit. If the Spirit can shine through, then a work of Fine Art can be a great work. The more the Universal Spirit of humanity shows forth, the more attractive that work is to the millions. For that reason, Hegel suggested, the greatest Art is religious Art or any Art that rises to the level of the spiritually sublime, as in Tragedy.
Hegel considered that there is a hierarchy among the Arts. The Arts with the most matter are always a little bit lower than the Arts with less matter. For example, for Hegel, Architecture is the lowest form of Art, because the Original Idea can rarely be perfectly executed through coordinating and budgeting the large crowd of workers needed to complete it.
Sculpture is higher than Architecture, but the limitations of the large marble mass were considerable when compared with the relative Freedom offered by oil on a canvas exhibiting colors, shapes and light, said Hegel.
Higher than Painting are Dance and Music, Art forms that again require many people. However, the substance of these Art forms is not found simply as the human body or the musical instrument, rather, it is found within fleeting motions of the body, or the fleeting vibrations of the instrument. Music is ethereal, and when a musician stops playing, all Music itself stops. Further, Music is invisible to the eye, audible to the ear but also to the heart, and has the capability of manipulating human emotions in the most unique manner.
But the highest form of Art, said Hegel, is Poetry, and the highest form of Poetry is Tragic Drama. Drama is an imitation of Life - not just as in Comedy, the external vagaries of Life, but the inner Life of the human being who suffers and who dies.
Hegel remained a Christian all his life, although he was, as Cyril O'Regan aptly demonstrated, a Heterodox Christian. So we should not be surprised when we read that the Tragic Drama of Christ was, for Hegel, the highest expression of Fine Art, and a narrative that could not be repeated enough times by the Artists of each century.

An ad for his Lightning Process--based on insecurity?

Full disclosure: I've only read 75% of this book and am probably not going to finish it. It's poorly written, poorly planned, and based in insecurity.

Parker spends pages and chapters haranguing you about how you have to believe that there's a mind/body connection. (OK, OK, I do.)

He includes zillions of testimonials but they all scrupulously omit any description of his process.

He includes a whole aggrieved chapter trying to refute the bad things people have said about him on the Internet. (Phil, honey, just a hint: If no one is saying bad things about you on the Internet, it's probably because no one is talking about you there at all.)

My main difficulty, though, is that the book is pretty much an ad for his course, yet he says almost nothing concrete about it. Unfortunately, given that it's expensive and requires traveling somewhere, and that his customer base is largely people who have CFS/ME who can neither get around well nor earn a living any more, this seems mean-spirited at best and devious at worst. He seems to believe that any wheelchair-bound person can leave their children behind, dig up an attendant to travel with them at any time, and drop quite a bit of money, simply on his repeated assertions that it will all be OK as long as they believe. (Come on, Tinkerbelle!)

It's too bad because I can agree with the one thing he does say, that CFS may involve a bad feedback loop which produces constant physical-emergency responses in the body. But a good premise doesn't automatically translate into a good treatment.

I have no doubt (with insecurity positively reeking from the pages) that part of Parker's fears involve others stealing his methods. But he needs to recognize that more fully describing his methods is merely showing basic respect to those with limited resources of cash and energy. Other practitioners of various types describe their methods fully and still fill seminars, since written material and personal guidance really aren't the same.

Perhaps Mr. Parker needs to take his own process (which he claims also helps OCD, perfectionism, and fear of failure--surely it could help insecurity?) and then rewrite this book. As it is, my disappointment with its skimpiness ends up suggesting I'll also be disappointed with a skimpy course.

suspiciously claims to be a panacea for many condition-my snake oil detector is buzzing.
the lightning process has not been formally and thoroughly studied.
the lightning process buzz-or whatever buzz their is, is heavily dependant on testimonials, and testimonials themselves, do not constitute evidence of efficacy. i believe we should support real research into the medical aspects of ME. in my opinion the lightning process is what scientists call, woo-woo-

A must for pig ownership.

Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

This is a good introduction to pigs and pig raising. There is some good information to glean, but overall the material is a bit dated for current homesteading practices that are focused on pastured pork.

Very insightful on the process and how to execute a solid system for your sales team. No fluff. Best book on the subject.

After bearing two of his children, and falling in love with a fellow bondsman, Celia tried to sever the sexual relationship with her enslaver. He raped her; she killed him while try to defend herself. She was convicted of murder and hanged at the age of 19. McLaurin has masterfully researched judicial, historical, and contemporary materials in preparing this compelling and thoughtful narrative. Enhanced by its sensitivity and brevity, this book is a provocative starting point for discussion of its many ethical, legal, historical, and social issues. Both a well-told historical narrative about a slave girl sexually exploited by her master, whom she later kills, and a thoughtful examination of the moral tensions that strained the fabric of the antebellum South. McLaurin teaches history at the Univ. of North Carolina. At the age of 14, Celia was purchased by aging and prosperous widower John Newsom. On their way back to his Missouri farm, Newsom raped his new ``possession'' and from then on treated her as his concubine, impregnating her at least three times. Celia endured her master's attentions for years, until she became involved with a fellow slave named George and demanded that Newsom stop. He refused and Celia struck him with a club. The blow proved fatal and a terrified Celia disposed of his body in her fireplace, a crime that was quickly discovered and brought to trial. McLaurin relates Celia's story in vivid prose, using her trial to bring in the larger issues confronting both the South and the North in the 1850's. He writes not only of the slavery question, but also of legal issues (``Antebellum southerners viewed their slaves as both chattels and persons, a paradox reflected in the legal systems...'') and of the role of women--black and white--in a white male society (``One of the essential legal differences between slave and free women was that free women were protected from sexual assault by law''). McLaurin's chronicle is tightly focused, with no great--but many small--illuminations, and his style is succinct and meticulous throughout. A weak story with a powerful context

The most powerful think about this book is the context that it puts a story in. The book can feel like a lot of speculation at times and can go into details that seem unnecessary but the way the book carefully points at its limited sources and makes educated guesses is part of the nature of what it is doing. You can google the story of the slave Celia in Missouri and think you have an understanding of her story but that doesn't do her or history any justice.I liked the book for the historical picture it painted -it was fascinating to see how almost everyone involved in Celia's trial had served in congress, or how connected the trial was to the ongoing Kansas-Nebraska prelude to the civil war. The book is very good history and well and carefully crafted but in the end only a few pages per chapter were actually dedicated to Celia specifically. For someone well versed in American history, then, the book was more about connecting one small story to a larger picture than learning about a complex group of people in a complex and specific part of Missouri.

In the end I felt like I didn't know more about Celia when I started the book then when I finished. I felt as if I knew more about exactly how and where we learned the facts about Celia's case and story, but I couldn't find real relevance or real significance. The book was a portrait, I feel, not a statement or argument. It is a very good portrait but I don't feel it was an engaging piece of history.

Should it be read? Absolutely. As a way to begin engaging with slavery, a slave society, and a historical Missouri in general the book is perfect. However, if you are looking for something more than an introduction, or some way to further grasp the horrifying past of slavery or to learn about an extraordinary woman you might read something else. I have no doubt that Celia was an extraordinary woman but that doesn't come through in the book. What comes through is that she lived in an extraordinarily volatile time and that we have extraordinarily little information on her -and less on the thousands of other in her situation. I came away from the book questioning how little I know more than feeling like I knew or understood more -a valuable experience but not what I was hoping for when I picked up the book.

CELIA ,THE SLAVE Brings a Forgotten Slave into the Light

This riveting and slim book tells what it can of the story of Celia, a slave whose tragedy played out in rural Missouri in the 19th century. As he gives us Celia's story, McLaurin clearly explains the history of slavery in Missouri and how it intertwined with the national politics of slavery. Reading the book for that alone is well worth it.

A Missouri farmer buys Celia from an owner whose name is still unknown. The evil of Celia's new bondage is cruelly and fatefully enforced, even as she and her new master travel back to his farm. What happens to her from then on is a reflection of all the evils of slavery. And the fact that there is so much about Celia's life and her identity that cannot be recovered is one of those very evils.

Not to be missed!

I had to read this book for an online History of Missouri class for Mizzou. I was reluctant to read it--who, as a kid, hasn't heard of the terrible ordeals slaves had to endure? Who hasn't had to read about slavery and abolitionists and Frederick Douglass? I thought it would be the same old thing.

I was pleasantly surprised; the author does a fabulous job setting up the historical setting, and shows an appreciation for ALL of the thoughts and feelings of the time period. I was VERY impressed at the author's objectivity--it is easy to get sucked into 21st century pity or anger or blame.

The front and back covers of the book make this seem a bit more like a dramatic story, but it's a very detailed historical account that gives wonderful insight into antebellum Missouri and slavery.
