Don't Buy! You're Wasting Your Money! It's Identical To The 8th Edition!

Firstly, this is one of the textbooks required for a course of mine and I just received the book and when I opened it, I discovered that the actual text was not only upside-down, meaning I have to turn the book upside-down to read it, but it's also backwards. What I mean by backwards is that in the US, the text goes from the left side of the book/page to the right side of the book/page, here it's the opposite, you have to read it from the right side of the book/page to the left. So I received a defective copy which agitated me. But the primary reason why you shouldn't purchase this book is because I overheard a peer of mine in class mention that the 8th edition of this book (which is sold as new for less than half the price (around $30 for a tangible copy) and used for about $5-also for a tangible copy) is identical. I looked up the chapters here on Amazon, and compared them with my 9th edition textbook and it's the exact same! 14 chapters! Same chapter headings and content! I was fooled. This is more of the same, corporations vomiting the same textbooks with new covers citing the latest edition in an attempt to justify the exorbitant price tag that students have to pay! Thankfully technologies like Kindle and other e-readers are cutting into the profits of these bloodsuckers by making their digital copies less expensive. I feel ripped off. Why the hell would my instructor do this?! Why would he assign this expensive trash when the same garbage is sold for much less?!

Poor Editing of an otherwise good text

This book is fabulous at highlighting US Foreign policy and all that has happened in that arena since the start of the Nation. That being said, this book is FULL of editing mistakes such as When Carter had to address the interference of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in 1999. 1999? Really? How do you miss that?

The book is written extremely well and very easy to follow and understand even if you have no previous background knowledge on the issues discussed... a great book I couldn't even believe when I was done reading it as it reads very fast!

Good for beginners

I read that book not because I want to become a hacker but because I am really concerned with my computer system safety and while I am just a user and will never start coding or even implement half the tips mentioned in the book, I found it useful and eye opening. As it is a beginner`s guide, the book is not too complicated and is quite simple to understand. Highly recommended!

About the Author

I guess it had to happen sooner or later MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT, in an Amazon purchase !
I bought this book based on reviews posted on Amazon, and now I can only imagine those reviews were posted by the author, or family members. My fascination with my Kindle, has led me to experiment with authors unknown to me, with some success, but the only word I can use to describe this book is AWFUL. A meandering mish mash of drivel, next time I'll save my $8 for a known commodity.

Mysterious - Draws you in!

Reagan Rothe has written a novel that draws the reader into a very unusual, mystical world. You're constantly wondering what is going to happen next to the characters. From the very beginning, your mind is asking, "What?!" And you're questioning the events trying to figure out the puzzle and to understand the tortured characters. It reminds me of movies where you're sitting on the edge of your seat and you don't dare blink your eyes!

Best Automotive Publisher Around

Robert Bentley Publishing has created an art out of automotive repair. Their books are the most in depth, real world available on the market. Unlike some other publishers on the market, their books provide you with all possibilities depending on year, make, problem, etc. rather than "if the switch doesn't work on position 1,2,3, but on four, replace the switch" which by the way wasn't my problem at all....(worn out #3 resistor on fresh air fan relay). Consider these books an investment, you won't only save time in troubleshooting, but also by doing it right the first time.

Bently wins hands down

While both Clymer and Hayes publish what could be described as an adequate service manual, the Bently service manual is definitive! Bently has an obviously close relationship with VW and it shows. At 500 pages Bently covers all permutations. When compared to the others, it may be twice the price but its ten times the manual. It really is a bargain.
I've used the Bently manual for everything from minor service issues (ie brakes & tune-ups) to major whole engine teardowns. The manual warns you of ahead of time where a special VW tool (they even specify the tool) or the servces of a machine shop is needed.
Frankly, I wouldn't attempt a repair without it. I just bought a new VW and bought the manual along with it.

GO NOW! Guide

I bought my copy of Pacific Crossing Notes on Amazon, but I am writing a review at the request, on page 373, of the author. The book is great - and I think essential - for those who are really going to go. There is a lot of priceless information about radio nets, websites, how to get - and use - weather information, passage planning, whether to dare to go to Fatu Hiva without formally checking in at the Marquesas first (page 180), etc., etc. I have never read anything like it, except occasional articles in the Seven Seas Cruising Association Bulletin. I love that the authors' 35 year old boat had neither air conditioning, a water maker, or a flat screen TV. The book is focused on boats "the rest of us" own and cruise.

I think the book is not, nor was it written to be, great literature, and those who are looking for great sailing literature should try the Hiscocks, for starters. But the book is 5 stars for what it is intended to be - a practical GO NOW! guide.

Wonderfully Written and Practical Resource for Sailing/Cruising Enthusiasts!

A wonderfully written and practical resource for sailing and cruising enthusiasts- including armchair cruisers! I would heartily recommend this book by Nadine Slavinski and Markus Schweitzer for anyone planning to cruise, or dreaming of adventure travel by sailboat or with plans to sail in the South Pacific.

The chapters are very well organized; as well as chocked full of helpful and interesting tips on the sailing lifestyle, family cruising, and sailing the Islands of the Coconut Milk Run. Helpful resources such as books and websites were also included at the end of each chapter. The author's writing style is excellent and this book is well written.

As someone about to buy a bluewater cruising sailboat and head off cruising, I especially enjoyed the chapters on Preparation, Getting the Most Out of a Survey, From Weekend Warrior to Ocean Voyager, Safety, Cockpit Safety, Weather Notes, and more! Detailed information was also provided for each place they have traveled; very practical and useful information for those heading that way.

Reading the description of how helpful the authors found their new Parasailor, and whether it was worth the investment, was another favorite section of the book, as was reading their time spent in Maupiti, in French Polynesia and Vanautu. All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; it is a must have for new Pacific cruisers! Please note that I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thus said, I loved this book, and I know I will often refer to sections as I prepare for my own adventure.

A Wealth of Information

The South Pacific holds a wealth of adventure for those willing to take to the wind and sail across it. The authors of this book did just that and they did it well. And they did it with their young son on board. I was very interested to read the authors' perspective of this journey as I am currently in New Zealand after having followed a similar route. There is so much to share and I was interested in seeing how they was able to boil it down to one book.

If you are interested in sailing across the South Pacific this book gives you a good idea of the adventures that await. Of course to someone who has been there it seems light at times but I understand and appreciate the difficulty in sharing all of it. The authors do a great job of referring you to other sources of information on many subjects, especially weather routing...everyone's biggest fear.

Lots to read and enjoy.
