Good Overview of Market Strategy
By Kevin Smith
This textbook was assigned for the final course of my University of Maryland University College (UMUC) MBA course, Strategic Marketing. The book provided a plethora of case studies and diagrams to compliment the concepts discussed. Overall very effective in demonstrating the material. If you're looking for in-depth material in a particular aspect of market strategy you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an introduction, this is the perfect place to start.

Marketing Strategy
By Murilo Carrazedo
Marketing Strategy is an excellent book for those who wish to grasp the essence of strategy in organizations. Beginning with strategy at corporate level, the authors narrow down the strategy scope down to the level of marketing strategy at functional level, showing the interdependencies of the various levels of strategy within the organizations.

Confusing Textbook
By B395
This book is very confusing to read and hard to follow. I do not like that there is not a glossary for the important terms in the chapter. I do like that there are real marketing stories in the beginning of each chapter that ties in what you will learn in that chapter. However, based on the entire book I would not recommend this as a marketing textbook.

A Symbolist Masterpiece
By Richard A. Blumenthal
Petersburg was originally published between 1913 and 1914 in installments by Sirin in its literary miscellany of the same name, and then in book form in 1916. Obviously dissatisfied with the first edition, Bely began revising it almost immediately, but during the revolutionary and civil war period, he could find no one interested in publishing a revised second edition. Bely emigrated to Berlin temporarily, where he found a publisher, and made massive cuts to the novel. The revised novel was published in 1922 (the authoritative text for this translation), and was reprinted in the Soviet Union in 1928 with minor changes made by Bely and extensive modifications made by the Soviet censors. The 1928 edition was reprinted in 1935, but with the growing demand that literature conform to the standards of Socialist Realism, Petersburg was virtually ignored until, with the gradual easing of restrictions after Stalin's death, it regained a certain respectability.

The novel takes place over a short period of time in the autumn of 1905. Although Russian cultural activity was gaining more and more prominence on an international scale, political and social unrest were on the rise domestically. Demand for reform was rampant, and even outright revolution was being advocated in some circles. Commencing in January 1905, a series of strikes, assassinations, and uprisings had occurred. The widespread feeling among the populace that the old values were inadequate for a burgeoning modernity, and that Russia was teetering on the edge of an abyss, becomes apparent early in the novel in this beautifully poetic passage:

From the fecund time when the metallic Horseman had galloped hither, when he had flung his steed upon the Finnish granite, Russia was divided in two. Divided in two as well were the destinies of the fatherland. Suffering and weeping, Russia was divided in two, until the final hour.

Russia, you are like a steed! Your two front hooves have leaped far off into the darkness, into the void, while your two rear hooves are firmly implanted in the granite soil. (64)

As Maguire and Malmstad note, this prophetic meditation on Russia's destiny is similar to several lines in Pushkin's poem, The Bronze Horseman. Both Bely and Pushkin raise the issue stemming from Peter the Great's Westernizing innovations: had Peter's western influences detached Russia from her native traditions and divided her in two, the peasants on the one hand and the Westernized elite on the other, setting her on an unknown course that would eventually lead to destruction?

The plot is rather simple, a political thriller paced by a ticking time bomb that Nikolai Apollonovich Ableukhov, a university student who has become entangled in a revolutionary terrorist organization, agrees to plant in his father's house, the senator, Apollon Apollonovich Ableukhov. Underlying the apparent simplicity, however, is a very complex text with intricately woven plots and subplots on many levels. Petersburg is suspenseful, socially relevant, political, psychological, philosophical, and historical, and loose ends come together in the myriad of characters who populate the novel, ranging from the powerful and privileged to the poor and discontented, through whom Bely paints a vivid picture of Petersburg society. There are double agents, terrorists, journalists, secret police, government officials, and society people. Peter the Great is himself evoked through the images of the Bronze Horseman and the Flying Dutchman. Many characters confront a personal crisis: the family crisis triggered by his wife's flight to Spain with her Italian lover in the case of the senator; the love crisis of his son, Nikolai Apollonovich, as a result of his broken relationship with Sofia Petrovna; and the consciousness crises experienced by both Nikolai, who has rejected Kant, and Dudkin, who has become disillusioned with Nietzsche, each searching for a new meaning in life. These personal crises are intensified by, and representative of, the real social, political and governmental crises within Russia herself.

As a paradigm of Russian Symbolism, with no omniscient narrator, Bely demands that his readers be attentive, astute, and perceptive. Using synecdoche as a mode of expression, Bely often will not provide an image as a whole-we see a piece of attire, a prominent feature, a segment:

Rolling toward them down the street were many-thousand swarms of bowlers. Rolling toward them were top hats, and the froth of ostrich feathers.

Noses sprang out from everywhere. (178)

Earlier in the novel, Bely depicts another crowd scene:

Contemplating the flowing silhouettes, Apollon Apollonovich likened them to shining dots. One of these dots broke loose from its orbit and hurtled at him with dizzying speed, taking the form of an immense crimson sphere-
-among the bowlers on the corner, he caught sight of a pair of eyes. And the eyes expressed the inadmissible. They recognized the senator, and, having recognized him, they grew rabid, dilated, lit up, and flashed. (14)

The present is chaos, precariously moving on an apocalyptic path. Apollon Apollonovich recognizes the chaos and sees the crowd in fragments because of his sense of isolation and vulnerability in a Russia at the brink of radical change. The dots and spheres also form a leitmotif through which the apocalyptic themes of the novel are presented. The sphere is crimson, a color associated with revolution and danger. An ominous feeling, together with a sense of apprehension and disorientation, permeates the novel. The sense of insecurity we experience as we read through the novel parallels the sense of insecurity the inhabitants of 1905 Petersburg must have endured.

Wonderful. The best novel I have read. Period.
By A Customer
A strangly comical story about the chaos and absurdity of Russian life and politics circa 1905. It tells the story of a Russian family at odds with itself. The main characters are an aristocratic father, his politically rebellious son, the estranged wife, a back-stabbing political party, the "Red Domino", and a ticking bomb....!!! Warning: The prose is somewhat a slow read as it takes time to get used to the Symbolists style of writing. If you can get through the first 30 pages you won't regret it. This book has not been called the best Novel of the 20th century for nothing !!!

One of the greatest masterpieces of 20th-century prose
By A Customer
According to Vladimir Nabokov, this work rates with Joyce's Ulysses and Kafka's Transformations. I'll take this one over its competition. One of the most well-read works of Russia's Silver Age, I recommend it not only as literature but also as cultural history. PLEASE, find an edition of the Maguire and Malmstad translation, it's much more lucid. Bely is difficult enough even if you read Russian; you need all the help in translation you can get. The notes are copious but, if read attentively, help place the book in the cultural context in which it was written.

Reconstruction in Philosophy, by John Dewey

"A modern classic. Dewey's lectures have lost none of their vigor … The historical approach, which underlay the central argument, is beautifully exemplified in his treatments of the origin of philosophy." — Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.
"It was with this book that Dewey fully launched his campaign for experimental philosophy." — The New Republic.
Written shortly after the shattering effects of World War I, John Dewey's Reconstruction in Philosophy offers an insightful introduction to the concept of pragmatic humanism. The eminent philosopher presents persuasive arguments against traditional philosophical constructs, suggesting their basis in self-justification; instead, he proposes an examination of core values in terms of their ultimate effects on the self and others. Dewey's experimental philosophy represented a significant departure from its predecessor, utilitarianism, and it was received with both outrage and acclaim for daring to mingle ethics and science.
Delivered in 1919 as a series of lectures at Tokyo's Imperial University of Japan, Dewey's landmark work appears here in an enlarged edition that features an informative introduction by the author, written more than 25 years after the book's initial publication.

Amazon.com Review
For those of us trying to make sense of the world and the institutions we devise to cope with it, John Dewey's Reconstruction in Philosophy offers tremendous insight. Writing a few years after World War I, the highly regarded American philosopher chose to embrace the modern sense of scientific optimism and apply it to the search for truth. He argued forcefully that our philosophical constructions are not based in reason, but only use higher thinking to justify themselves, and that we might find better ways of living if we examine our deepest beliefs and feelings with an eye toward their ultimate effects on us and others. This experimental philosophy, pragmatism, took several steps beyond the previous century's utilitarianism and was both hailed and reviled as a subsumption of philosophy and ethics into science.

Written as lectures, Reconstruction in Philosophy is marginally less dry than other philosophical tracts, but for readers new to the jargon, some sections can be slow-going. The pleasure of Dewey's works, though, comes from the intellectual stimulation of following a brilliant mind into then-uncharted epistemological territory. The last chapter, "Reconstruction As Affecting Social Philosophy," foreshadows so much 20th-century political thinking--from across the spectrum--that it ought to be required reading in high school civics classes. Did pragmatism change our lives for the better? The very fact that we can ask such a question is Dewey's legacy; the answer must remain an open question. --Rob Lightner

From the Back Cover
The basic postulate of the text: namely, that the distinctive office, problems and subjectmatter of philosophy grow out of stresses and strains in the community life in which a given form of philosophy arises, and that its specific problems vary with the changes in human life that are always going on.

An Absolutely Wonderful Find!
By David Milliern
Prior to reading "Reconstruction in Philosophy," I was simply unaware of how brilliant of a philosopher, social theorist, and psychologist Dewey is. Definitely a pragmatist, Dewey puts his own unique polish on the philosophy, partly in his filling out of Peirce and James' ideas, partly in his application of the program to areas left mostly untouched by the others. What fascinated me most about Dewey, in this book, is how fundamentally the pragmatic manner of thinking had creatively shaped his views, and how interestingly pragmatism meshed with his areas of interest outside of philosophy proper. For instance, in the first couple of chapters, he proposes the rise and function of imagination and memory in prehistoric man, and how this idea relates to modern intellectual thought.

Now, I haven't read all of Dewey, by any stretch; but I think this is probably the best book of his to start with. I could be wrong on this point. However, having read Dewey's many articles on such topics as the reflex arc, his book on Darwin's effect on philosophy, and books on social matters, such as "Human Nature and Conduct," I think the chapters of this book give a decent eclectic assortment of some of the more basic things that he thinks, and so it provides a good launch pad for reading his other works. The book is easily accessible, as many of his works are, and plainly written. The books success in giving a major thrust for pragmatism into different areas cannot be discounted. I find it very unfortunate and sad that more people have not read this book. It is important that everyone read this, especially if one is to read nothing more of Dewey's. Read it!

I recommend this book to all: philosophers, scientists, scholars in the humanities, medical health professional, engineers, academicians, college students, and high-school students --everyone.

Dewey's Pragmatic Manifesto
By Stuart W. Mirsky
A decent if uneven collection of lectures by Dewey, spelling out his philosophy in the years subsequent to the First World War. Dewey is recognized today as one of the founding fathers of American Pragmatism, a philosophy that arose in the United States in reaction to the Hegelian and Idealist modes of philosophizing then current in Europe and in American academic circles. The pragmatists, claiming C. S. Peirce as their initial founding father and William James as their most eloquent spokesman, were ably represented by Dewey who even James seemed to defer to in his own works (Pragmatism, The Meaning of Truth). Dewey is best remembered today for his role in the philosophy of education but his basic thinking arose from his embrace of the pragmatic conception espoused by Peirce which makes truth and knowledge a function of what works for the knowing subject. This is sometimes oversimplified as the supposition that what works is true and what's true is what works but that's not a fair explanation of the pragmatic conception. As James points out in his book Pragmatism, true claims in this pragmatic sense are those which are seen to fit within larger conceptual/theoretical frameworks which prove themselves through application in the real world. It's not a one-to-one correspondence of claim to fact-in-the-world but a holistic correspondence which depends on the systemic effectiveness of our interlocking beliefs and claims, some of which touch ground in the real world but some of which may not or may never actually do so. Dewey's contribution to this is visible in the first lecture in this book in which he lays out his case for how human knowledge arises in a social context. He argues that knowledge is interactivity, activity of the organism in response to and proactively affecting its world. Rejecting the passive picture of human beings as recipients of information, he makes the case that information, the things we know, arises as part of the give and take of living and that this reaches a certain level in organisms like us.

But that level, that capacity to conceptualize, itself develops in a social context, a function of community sharing of activity. Thus he lays out how human thinking changes with the change in cultural elements. Primitive humans, he argues, are concerned with gathering food and eating it and that, when not so engaged, they are mainly interested in entertaining themselves, in leisure in which imagination, stories and mythic motifs, develop and dominate. Their ideas are built around emotion and visual imagery, their interests devoted to sensation and the world they conceive leads naturally to activities which embody their thoughts about things. When modes of life change and settlements take hold, when life is redirected to working (farming, producing) from hunting and gathering, methods of thought and thinking change, too. Specialization leads to more concrete forms of thinking and ideas and beliefs take on a new cast. Dewey tells an interesting and convincing story about how we get from the mythic to the scientific worldview and points out, in the process, just how knowledge, understood as interactivity with our world and others in a communal environment, takes shape and builds toward what we are today.

Some of the later essays are more turgid and redundant as he moves in these lectures from a pragmatic account of knowledge and knowing to applications in the realm of ethics and political theory. Dewey rejects what he takes to be the crassness of capitalism and excess individualism in favor of his communal picture of knowledge and human action. One interesting area of his thought occurs in one of the last essays where he tackles the problem of moral philosophy. For Dewey, that which is good is so only to the extent that it's good for someone where being good for someone depends on its meeting specific needs that individual has.

Such needs may vary from individual to individual (there are no fixed goods in Dewey's view that exist independent of those who count them as good, no bottom line principles of action to which we must adhere). All our valuational choices, including the moral ones, will depend on who and what we are and what that entails for us in terms of actions. Goodness and badness is realized only in action not through contemplation or speculative theorizing, just as all knowledge is for him. Action comes first, not thought -- for thought occurs only within the context of acting agents. Thoughts reflect the inputs our actions generate for us and how we react to them.

Moral valuation is realized in the same fashion. We develop as living organisms, and thus know what we count as morally good, on the fly, in the course of acting in the world. Dewey utterly rejects the Platonic notion of goodness as an ideal form, an ideal standard against which our acts must be measured. The ideal of goodness we learn to hold is only a function of generalizing our many particular experiences. It has no distinct existence apart from those experiences. What then, for Dewey, counts as moral goodness? What is it that human beings ought to aim to achieve or obtain in order for their lives to be counted as good, as worthwhile?

He rejects the idea of individual satisfaction as being the ultimate good towards which individuals must strive although he approves the utilitarian approach of shooting for the greatest good for the greatest number. What he objects to in the utilitarians is what they count as that good. He rejects the utilitarian supposition, then popular in his day, that goodness equates with pleasure or happiness and that the moral good consists of maximizing instances of one or the other of these across the human population. First, he rejects any idea that there can be a valuational bottom line, an intrinsic goodness to be sought by all human beings because this, he thinks, already assumes some ultimate form of the good, some platonic notion of an ideal to be realized in the particulars of our lives. On his pragmatic view there is no such ideal standard, not even in the natural sense of individual experiences like happiness or pleasure. What's good is what works for the individual and that may be quite different than any particular notion of happiness or pleasure. What works will be that which advances the interest of the organism in question, an interest grounded in the organism's successful continuance in the world.

He rejects the notion of individual satisfaction, moreover, because he doesn't see human beings as ultimately isolated individuals and argues, instead, that the self we are is only created and maintained in association with others, as part of a community of selves. As such, the utilitarian idea that the "intrinsic" good is maximal pleasure or happiness (or some equivalent) across a population of individuals is, he thinks, fundamentally mistaken. This leads to selfishness and, thus, bad outcomes for human beings in general, as it gives rise to rampant capitalism and greed, to a materialistic attitude which demeans the experience of human beings. Utilitarianism, he thinks, must lead to the sort of social outcome which is bad for human beings in the aggregate. In contrast to the error of individualism, he argues that what's good for individuals is successful societies, i.e, those that consist of sound institutions which contribute to the progress of all the individuals that find their realization within those societies.

His is an argument for a naturalistic account of goodness grounded in measurable human progress attained through effective social institutions which contribute to improvements in the human beings who are served by those institutions. Such progress includes scientific and technological advancements, but also the kind of individual cultivation that allows human beings in those societies to flourish because it increases their health and capacities for living more satisfying lives (improved aesthetic appreciation) with reduced suffering. It's not a utilitarian calculus which totes up individual satisfactions that matter, in Dewey's view, but an approach that aims at the continued enrichment and improvement of the social organism itself, that society of many individuals who take their individuality from their interconnections with their fellows, from their place within a robust, rewarding agglomeration of such institutions.

Thus on this Deweyan view, what we call the "moral good" (the class of things that are right to do) will be those objectives and modes of behavior which most contribute to a better society, defined as one that enriches and supports human progress. Concern for others will be translated into avoidance of things like theft and telling intentional falsehoods, of causing others unjustified pain and, indeed, avoidance of any manner of behavior which causes others to have a worse life than they might otherwise have. Such concerns will be the basis of our moral claims and will inform our expectations of our social institutions. Actions that build and support such desirable institutions, and reject and discard those which do not serve this purpose, will be among those we count as "moral," too.

Dewey's approach is purely naturalistic, since he rejects all notions of ideal states and otherworldly standards and directives. The real world is a practical one, pressing us to judge and act in accordance with the exigencies of each moment rather than to suppose our behaviors can be made to fit pre-existing codes and laws. Our values, the things we count right to do, will be discovered in the moment, in the nexus of the act and what's acted on, of our interactions with the world and with others who share it with us. Each moment will present us with new opportunities to discover and realize the good things, the right things to do, but always without resort to some previously promulgated code whatever we suppose its provenance to be.

And in each moment we create our values anew by living in the world and being part of it. Deweyan ethics ground our moral choices in our practical lives -- but they do so in a way that recognizes the importance of the communal milieu in which we stand and which makes each of us individual human beings (for we only attain our individualization in the context of a group). In rejecting the classical ethical notions of means and ends, of intrinsic and extrinsic goods, of goods in the abstract at all, Dewey offers a piecemeal morality grounded in a general belief in the possibility, in the necessity, of human progress. Progress, on this view, is the ultimate goal of creatures like ourselves.

Dewey's is a kind of group ethic, favoring and rewarding the individual only by and through the group -- as realized in the shared institutions in which individuals exist. It's naturalistic in its refusal to grant otherworldly or supernatural status to the factors that underwrite the choices we make, and it's scientific in that it acknowledges and supports the growth of human knowledge through respect for and development of the sciences. The good for human beings is, Dewey thinks, his or her continued existence (as it is for all beings) but continued in the most effective possible way: A way that nurtures and develops sound institutions which support and advance the condition of those individuals who have their membership in them. What's morally good or right to do, for Dewey are thus just those things which favor those social institutions and practices best suited to advance (and enhance) the quality of the lives of human beings.

Some of the middle lectures in this book are less satisfying because they lack a certain tightness of exposition. But if one is interested in getting a flavor of Deweyan pragmatism, in comparison with James' psychologistic version, or in seeing how Dewey's pragmatism presages modern progressive thought, this book's a good place to start.

Good place to start
By Grant H. Franks
Lectures given in Japan provide a popular, but not superficial, entry into the profound work of John Dewey. He was far more than an educational reformer, and his pragmatism was not (as sometimes imagined) a shallow disguise for American opportunism. The ancient and medieval vision of a coherent universe governed by a transcendent Father/creator is charming, but it looks more questionable when Dewey draws our attention to its connection to authoritative government. What might a really democratic philosophy look like? Dewey points the way to exploring this question.
