Primer on the state of our environmental affairs

As a nature teacher who runs a family adventure school in Saint Louis, this is the book I've long been searching for. It's a primer on environmental issues in the state of Missouri and It is neither boring, dry nor depressing.

Each short chapter tackles one environmental issue and features a local expert or champion in his or her subject area. Subject areas range from radioactive waste, to tree planting, to river clean up. It offers a complete yet concise picture of our state of environmental affairs. Honestly, it should be required reading for every high school student.

I happen to know that this book is cutting the front edge of the environmental justice movement, and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) has put out a call to produce a similar book in each state. Kudos to the author.

If you are a first rate teacher, engaged parent or active citizen in Missouri, especially Saint Louis, I strongly encourage you to buy this book. Knowledge is power!

Overall, the book does an excellent job introducing a wide array of environmental topics affecting Missouri today.

Environmental Missouri gives a brief overview on forty-five different environmental issues that are facing Missouri today, but are also applicable to many other places too. Each chapter provides a brief overview of a particular environmental topic and then how it relates specifically to Missouri, for example airborne Mercury. The book also includes a brief Q&A section in each chapter between the author and an expert, leader, or organizational representative that is knowledgeable on the topic. The text easily introduces scientific topics to readers and is not complex or difficult to understand. The book is not a stand alone book though on any given environmental topic, but the strength of this book is that each chapter is accompanied by a notes section and an additional readings list. Overall, the book does an excellent job introducing the reader to a wide array of environmental topics affecting Missouri today.

This is very good as it covers a lot of ground but there is virtually no mention of climate change as an issue. And each issue gets only maybe 2 to 3 pages. Otherwise this is good.

The most complete book on embroidery stitches I've seen!

This is a great resource book for anyone interested in stitchery of any kind. I purchased this book to use as a guide for teaching my daughters and girls club members embroidery...I was delighted and surprized at the depth and scope of embroidery stiches and styles illustrated in this book.
I was expecting a book that detailed embroidery stiches...this book beautifully illustrates not only stitches on various fabrics, but also shows cross stitch, a wide scope of needlepoint styles (including Bargello), smocking, drawn-thread work, applying sequins and beads, cutwork, applique and so much more! There is a photograph of each completed stitch along with a detailed illustration and simple, easy to follow directions. The table of contents is a delight in itself, with 1" photos of the different stitches along with the name and page for quick and easy location for whatever project you are working on. Even the size of the book is perfect...it's compact size and sturdy board cover make it just right to include in your sewing basket or project bag for easy reference.
Everything about this book was well thought-out and beautifully executed. It's an incredible reference guide that I'm sure I will be turning to over and over again in the years to come.

Embroiders usually have their favorite stitches and may learn new ones from fellow embroiderers, but Betty Barnden's Embroidery Stitch Bible is an important reference for those wishing to improve their technique. Over 200 embroidery stitches, from basic cross stitch and chains to laid work, are arranged according to use and illustrated with both photos and diagrams. This means that Embroidery Stitch Bible can be used as both a reference for quick consultation and as a guide to learning new stitches. The close-up color examples and both written and visual surveys are excellent and easy to follow.

Great book, great format!

This little hardboard book from Krause Publications is both beautiful and useful (and how many of us can make that claim?) Clearly this is a book where each detail has been thoughtfully planned to make it useful for the stitcher.

The book covers both surface and canvas stitched and puts either one or two stitches per page. The stitches are photographed clearly and there is a large clear diagram directly below. The text contains instructions for the correct working of the stitch. At the bottom of each page there is some additional information. It provides alternate names for the stitch, a listing of suggested uses and notes which contains short tips for making this stitch look its best.

All the basic stitches are covered and the book is particularly deep on surface stitches, including some specialized techniques like hemstitching and drawn thread.

Just this is enough to make it a good book, but there are lots of wonderful little touches. First inside the hardboard cover is a ring binding, so the book lays flat, but the wire won't catch the threads. The size is small enough to make it easy to carry around and the covers are thick and sturdy.

Each stitch is numbered and they are grouped into categories. Each category, for example detached stitches, uses a different ground and thread color for the stitched examples and a different color of thread. The diagrams are done in colors to match the samples. Along the side there are pastel bars in the same color scheme. One the left page the bar says if these are stitches for canvas or fabric. The right bars tells the group of stitches.

Beyond the stitch collection, there is a long section on stitching practice. This section covers different stitching techniques (with small motifs to try as examples). design repeats and finishing. Each area is profusely illustrated and has clear explanations.

This book is one of the best overall embroidery books I've seen in a long time..

Alfred Brooks, hero of The Contender (1967), reappears as a police sergeant who rescues a young Native American boxer from drug pushers. Sonny Bear, 17, steps off the bus in N.Y.C., accepts a job with a hustler (``Stick''), and is immediately busted for possession. Sonny has talent, but he's hot-tempered and undisciplined; he's nearly killed in the correctional facility before Brooks springs him and sends him to Donatelli's Gym, the place in Harlem where world champions, and Brooks himself, once trained. Characters here may sneer at Rocky and The Karate Kid, but the story has elements of both. Sonny's training begins on the reservation, where it's supplied by old Jake Stump, member of a secret society (the ``Running Braves''); after a brief course of instruction at Donatelli's, the youth enters a citywide amateur competition and rips his way to the finals. The book that I chose to read was titled The Brave by Robert Lipsyte. This book
was really good and I enjoyed it. To be honest it was the best book I read in a
while. People that are into action, drama, a little comedy, etc, should really check it out.
You will get caught up in it and you will not wan't to stop reading. The Brave is very
good on giving descriptions and telling how it relates to reality. Especially when
racism is involved. The story revolves around Sunny, a half American, half Indian
struggling to stay alive in the world. This story shows just how Sunny stays alive and
how he searches for his mother on the way. The one good thing about Sunny is his
boxing skills. He doesn't like the enviroment that he is in while he was boxing, so he
moved away from the racist people to New York gainning more trouble there than he did
back home. This book has everything that someone could want in a story including
action,fighting, drama, etc. This is a very good written story and has very good details
within the story. Robert Lipsyte is a very talented author who has quite a bit of respect
from me now that I have read his work. Even though this is a great book there still are
some weaknesses within the plot. Sometimes the author changes the position of the story
so fast that it is hard to tell. An example is when Sunny and his friend Doll are in the pizza
place and then it says he is in the store that was across the street earlier on, and it made
me get somewhat confused and have to go back and re-read what had happend. The Brave
is a book that I can't stop talking about and I hope that every book fan goes and checks
this out.

Review of The Brave !

This book The Brave is awesome coming from having a boxing background myself,it's one of a kind .
I usually read this book in class whenever I get a chance, but I really couldn't put this book down after class, i sign a book out of the library for my dorm room to read went there nothing to do an i'm not tried.
I would like to read the brave again this book is great and reading it again for the heck of it would be a trill.
By looking at the title THE BRAVE i was skecptical i didn't know what to expect at first an amost look over it but i am glad i didn't i missed out on alot of good books in my day but this one found it's way to me.
I mean really who would wants to read a book with the brave as a title, hey don't let me discourage you Robert but i know he was a indian but if it was for the cover a would of though this was a war book.
This book is about a 17 year old boxer named Sonny Bear who live in a indian reservation near Sparta but go to New York to prosue a boxing career but also wants to find his mother trying to make his way of life better thought boxing, but as in life he take some wrong turns and some right one but you will have to read it to find out.

About the Author
Thomas D. Burrows is Professor Emeritus in the Radio, TV, and Film Department at California State University, Northridge. Retirement from full-time teaching has provided him the opportunity to pursue a number of activities relating both to his academic background and to his work as a professional broadcaster. He continues to work with California State University, Northridge, on a number of projects, and he is active in the production division of the broadcast Education Association. During his earlier career as a producer and director, he received the Christopher, Emmy, and Peabody awards. He holds an M.A. degree from the School of Journalism at the University of Southern California.

Lynne Schafer Gross is presently a Professor in the Department of Radio-TV-Film at California State University, Fullerton. She has written ten other textbooks and hundreds of magazine articles. In 1999 she was the recipient of the Frank Stanton Award for Distinguished Contribution to Electronic Media Education and in 1997 she received the Distinguished Education Service Award from the Broadcast Education Association. She is a past governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and has also chaired that organization’s Library Committee and Student Activities Committee. As Past President of the Broadcast Education Association she increased membership 24% and funding 59%. Professionally, she is currently Associate Producer for the video series “Journeys Below the Line” and in the past she was Director of Programming for Valley Cable TV and the producer of numerous radio and TV programs for public, commercial, and cable outlets. Her teaching and consulting have taken her to many countries including Malaysia, Swaziland, Estonia, Australia, Guyana, and Russia. Her doctorate is from UCLA.

James Foust is an Assistant Professor and current head of the Broadcast Journalism sequence at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He has worked for more than six years in Television production and news videography and editing. James Foust has a Ph.D. in Mass Communication and a MS in Journalism from Ohio University. He received his BA in Telecommunications from Youngstown State University.

Donald N. Wood has been teaching at California State University, Northridge, since 1970 as a professor of radio-TV-film. Professor Wood is the author of Mass Media and the Individual and Designing the Effective Message, and he is co-author of Educational Telecommunications. His most recent book (1996) is Post-Intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy: The Failure of Reason and Responsibility in the Twentieth Century.

Good Video Production Textbook

I continue to look for a book that conveys the myriad practical details needed to put together a successful video program. I'll have to admit this is one of the best textbooks I've seen on the subject; but I continue to search for a more practical guide to the art/science of live video production.

Sexy read

What a sexy read with a hot man! Shauna realizes she has been living a comfortable life but hasn't been alive until she meets Dutch. Dutch is an alpha male that treats her like she never knew she always wanted! I loved also that she was a BBW and became comfortable with herself and her man's love.

A wonderful series!

This is my first read of this authors work and I must say-- I was enthralled with this series. It brings to front issues that people face daily and struggle with in life. The old adage comes to front in this series, "Don't judge a book by it's cover!"

About the Author
J�rgen Konrad Mai studied medicine in Freiburg, Germany, Vienna and UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, U.S.A. Student and Medical practices in Freiburg (Clinic for Neurosurgery), Berlin and D�sseldorf. Dissertation ("summa cum laude") and habilitation were awarded by the University of D�sseldorf: After a period as GP in private practice (Titisee-Neustadt) he became scientific assistant and senior assistant at the C. and O. Vogt-Institute for Brain Research, University of D�sseldorf (1972 - 1983) and 1983 Professor of Neuroanatomy at the Institute of Neuroanatomy, H.-Heine-University of D�sseldorf. He served as director of the Department of the Institute of Anatomy 1 until retirement in 2011.
The main research interests are (i) the structural and molecular anatomy of the mammalian brain, especially of the human brain and (ii) expression patterns and regulation of terminal carbohydrates in development, cell activation and disease (III) operation planning in stereotactic neurosurgery. Mai has edited the catalogue of human brain sections from the Vogt collection; he is author and editor of several books, e.g. the awarded "Atlas of the Human Brain" with CD-ROM (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego), "The Human Nervous System" (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego, Amsterdam, 3rd ed. 2012), Funktionelle Anatomie f�r Zahnmediziner (Quintessenz, Berlin, 2nd. ed. 2008; Sensi Divini (ital., engl., ger, russ. eds). J. K. Mai is CEO of MR-X-Brain GmbH.

Professor George Paxinos, AO (BA, MA, PhD, DSc) completed his BA at The University of California at Berkeley, his PhD at McGill University, and spent a postdoctoral year at Yale University. He is the author of almost 50 books on the structure of the brain of humans and experimental animals, including The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, now in its 7th Edition, which is ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science. Dr. Paxinos paved the way for future neuroscience research by being the first to produce a three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, which is now used as an international standard. He was a member of the first International Consortium for Brain Mapping, a UCLA based consortium that received the top ranking and was funded by the NIMH led Human Brain Project. Dr. Paxinos has been honored with more than nine distinguished awards throughout his years of research, including: The Warner Brown Memorial Prize (University of California at Berkeley, 1968), The Walter Burfitt Prize (1992), The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science (Assoc Amer Publishers, 1999), The Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2001), The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Prize (Germany 2004), and more.
