About the Author
Leonard Ravenhill was born in 1907 in the city of Leeds, in Yorkshire, England. After his conversion to Christ, he was trained for the ministry at Cliff College. It soon became evident that evangelism was his forte, and he engaged it with both vigor and power. Eventually he became one of England's foremost outdoor evangelists. His meetings in the war years drew traffic jamming crowds in Britain, and great numbers of his converts not only followed the Savior into the Kingdom, but into Christian ministry and the world's mission fields.

In 1939 he married an Irish nurse named Martha. Together they had three sons. Paul and David are ministers, and Philip is a teacher. Leonard went home to be with the Lord in November of 1994.

About the Author

Robert Sebesta is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Computer Science Department at the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs. Professor Sebesta received a BS in applied mathematics from the University of Colorado in Boulder and MS and PhD degrees in computer science from Pennsylvania State University. He has taught computer science for more than 40 years. His professional interests are the design and evaluation of programming languages and Web programming.

Missed the "Boat"

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the previous books about Barker & Llewelyn this is obviously a "gimme" book. That is when an author or artist who has done excellent work in the past passes off something much inferior as a money maker based on his previous reputation. No great plot, no depth, no nothing. Just string some events together without much thought and sell it based on your reputation but not living to to your reputation. Quick and easy money. Hopefully if there are to be further books in this series they will be worth reading.

A taut closed-door murder mystery

In the eighth Barker and Llewellyn mystery (Some Danger Involved: A Novel, To Kingdom Come: A Novel, The Limehouse Text: A Novel, The Hellfire Conspiracy (Barker & Llewelyn, No. 4), The Black Hand: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel, Fatal Enquiry: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel, Anatomy of Evil: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel) Barker and Llewellyn find themselves in a "locked room murder" - hired to act as body guards and stranded on an island off the coast of Land's End, someone is murdering the guests. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, Thomas creates a taut mystery that kept me guessing until the final pages of the story.

The gradual unraveling of the backstories of the guests (the better to discover a motive), all while guests one-by-one end up murdered added an element of suspense to a well-crafted mystery. As with the previous books in the series, Lewellyn's voice and perspective (somewhat reminiscent of Watson to Barker's Holmes) was fun - light, a bit witty, and (mostly) observant in catching details ... I was able to figure out most of the whodunit by the end of the story.

I give it four stars because there was so little of the interaction and banter between Lewellyn and Barker (relative to previous stories) and even less backstory to Barker or relation and connection to contemporary events - elements that Thomas previously has intertwined into his writing, and which make the reading both more believable and entertaining. Still, I found it to be a tremendous read. I am very much looking forward to more by this author.

Island house party gone very wrong -- murder and intrigue!!

The format of this book is different than the other books in the series. Once you figure that out, just strap in for the ride. I loved this book! It's very Agatha Christie-esque with everyone being trapped on a basically deserted island and a mysterious sniper picking people off one by one. Barker and Llewelyn are hired as security for a house party that turns deadly and violent!

My only observation -- although I love the cover of this book, to me it doesn't have much to do with the plot. I had no idea before I started the book that almost all of the action takes place in a secluded island mansion. Not that it would have affected anything since I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series, just an observation.

If you enjoy this book, I recommend the other books in the series as well.

This suite of five stories hits all of Ishiguro's signature notes, but the shorter form mutes their impact. In Crooner, Tony Gardner, a washed-up American singer, goes sloshing through the canals of Venice to serenade his trophy wife, Lindy. The narrator, Jan, is a hired guitar player whose mother was a huge fan of Tony, but Jan's experience playing for Tony fractures his romantic ideals. Lindy returns in the title story, which finds her in a luxury hotel reserved for celebrity patients recovering from cosmetic surgery. The narrator this time is Steve, a saxophonist who could never get a break because of his loser ugly looks. Lindy idly strikes up a friendship with Steve as they wait for their bandages to come off and their new lives to begin. In the final story, Cellists, an unnamed saxophonist narrator who, like Jan, plays in Venice's San Marco square, observes the evolving relationship of a Hungarian cello prodigy after he meets an American woman. The stories are superbly crafted, though they lack the gravity of Ishiguro's longer works (Never Let Me Go; Remains of the Day), which may leave readers anticipating a crescendo that never hits. Ishiguro blends musical concepts with their literary counterparts in his latest work, and Nocturnes has the ephemeral quality of a song cycle with recurring themes and motifs developed in different prose keys. Though critics admired Ishiguro's lovely writing, "unassuming to the point of near-invisibility, like a lake whose still surface belies the turbulent currents beneath" (Los Angeles Times), they took issue with his characters—insubstantial and unconvincing when compared to the haunting creations found in his novels—and his implausible plot developments. Perhaps Entertainment Weekly summed it up best by stating that Nocturnes, by any other writer, would be praiseworthy; by a celebrated author like Ishiguro, it can best be likened to a minor work from a master composer.

Involving Collection with One Great Story

"Cellists", the final story in NOCTURNES, is superior work. In this story, a young cellist, Tibor, works closely with an unconventional teacher, Eloise, who makes him feel like he is a superior musician. Eventually, the story shows that Eloise, who considers both herself and Tibor to be virtuosos, has a sensitivity to music that is beyond her musicianship. Nonetheless, their musical interaction has a lifetime effect on Tibor, who thereafter has to adapt his talent and sense of virtuosity to his opportunities.

IMHO, the four other stories in NOCTURNES are less successful. Why? In "Cellists", Ishiguro presents, explores, and resolves a situation. But in his other stories, he captures characters after a transformational event has occurred ("Crooner") or life-shaping attitudes have formed ("Nocturne"). Or, his stories capture moments before an emotional situation has attained focus ("Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Malvern Hills"). These stories, in other words, present, but don't really resolve a dynamic. They read like they could be chapters in longer works that Ishiguro will never write.

The subtitle of NOCTURNES, "Five Stories of Music and Nightfall", is atmospheric and right for Ishiguro, whose stories don't really convey a clear sense of place, even though he identifies the location of his first four stories as Venice, London, Malvern Hills, and Hollywood. These stories unfold in dream-like bubbles, where the characters and the small decisions they make often seem a trifle weird and implausible.

Even so, an alternative and more telling subtitle might be "Five Stories of Success and Relationships," since the issue of success within difficult or strange relationships is at or near the center of these stories. Recommended.

Do not bother.

Had high hopes but, alas. Each story started well but ended mysteriously. In other words, the endings made no sense. I would not recommend it. Ishiguro's best: The Remains of the Day and, my all time favorite(which I read twice) Never Let Me Go. He is a good writer, is a pleasure to read but, I like my stories to make sense.

Don't be without this book if you own a VW.

Very easy and interesting to read, contains important things that the other repair manuals either gloss over, or leave out, or are just plain confusing about. You can start looking for something you want to fix right now, and end up reading on and on! Full of incredible helps. I advise sitting down and reading through it like any enjoyable book right up front, because you will pick up tidbits that you will need later! It will save you a lot of time later on when you stumble on something with your vehicle, but you've already read about it and it will come back to you! Great pictures, and fun drawings. Almost as fun as reading Mad Magazine as a 10 yr old, little pictures in the margins and borders are great!

Best Kept Secrect in the world of Bugs.... This book may have been for the hippies but, it is still relevent.

I had a bug in the 70's and this cook helped me repair, replace and rebuild.

Now that I got another bug how can I trust my bug to anything less?

Realistically, this book will help you rebuild your air-cooled bug. The car hasn't changed since they finished production and the book hasn't either. Complete with hand-drawn illustrations for the mechanical details for the repair/replacement to advice for buying the right bug. The language is every-day language rather than the pseudo-mechanical language one finds when reading Chilton's or Hayne's.

If you have a bug, do yourself a favor and buy this manual.
