About the Author

Jane Hunter is a postdoctoral researcher in STEM education at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Prior to her appointment to UTS in early February 2016, she taught in teacher education at Western Sydney University and the University of Sydney and in many K-12 schools; more recently, she worked as a senior education officer in various technology, professional teaching standards, and curriculum projects in the NSW Department of Education.

Using HPC to transform classroom practice

Clearly and concisely presented the High Possibility Classrooms (HPC) model, which arises from Hunter’s observation of four teachers' classroom practice, captures and documents innovative practice that has pedagogy at its heart. What I find interesting is that the HPC model for technology integration diverges from traditional views of ICT integration. Hunter's model is theory-driven technology practice focusing on purposeful planning and teaching, enriched subject matter and thinking and creating that stimulates authentic student engagement. For classroom practitioners, HPC provides instruction for teachers on how to use for example simple pedagogical techniques that make the learning intentions explicit, contribute to students’ enriched knowledge of the subject matter and builds opportunities for creativity and reflection. The chapter on Creating high possibility classrooms is of particular interest as it outlines how the finer detail of HPC can transform into “practice in action” to create motivating and engaging learning spaces and contexts.

This practical, user-friendly book is a must-read for all teachers. Dr Hunter examines the classroom practices of four exemplary teachers. Gina, Gabby, Nina and Kitty are inspiring in their use of technology and in their creativity. In each case study, technology is used to boost student voice, student ownership and self-regulation of learning. The book is packed with new ideas for experienced and less experienced teachers on integrating technology and enhancing creativity in the classroom. It has challenged me to question my practice and reassess my role in the classroom. Gina says, “My students work in a learning community to build meaning of the world out of the learning experiences they engage in. They are on task, they are in task and they are learning for a purpose.” It was interesting and motivating to read how these teachers foster an exciting ‘learning community’ using technology. The HPC conceptions will be a valuable ‘tool’ for guiding my classroom planning and practice from now on.

Excellent resource for ICT integration into the classroom

I purchased this book a few weeks ago as I am doing a Masters Degree in ICT in Education and seriously implementing ICT into the classroom. This is an excellent resource for a teachers professional library and presents many strategies in how to implement and integrate ICT into classroom teaching. This book is backed by extensive research into what works and includes a strong foundation of educational theory yet at the same time is easy to read and practical in its approach. The model of 'TPACK' with the added layer of 'High Possibility Classrooms' (HPC) means that the teacher following these structures will implement ICT integration far more efficiently and effectively. I highly recommend this book as being top of the list of purchases for anyone who is serious in integrating ICT into their classroom.

The book is reasonably good. It explains Deep Learning fairly well in a manner that is digestible for the non-PhD (notice the topic is very technical by nature, so it does cater to an audience that has a good understanding of quantitative methods in general). A definite positive associated with this book is that the author gives you exposure and teaches you how to use three different R Deep Learning packages.

However, the narrative includes a few confusing statements. For instance, the author advances that Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are the equivalent of a series of Log-linear regression models. That’s inaccurate. He meant to say Logit Regression models instead. Also, throughout the book he repeats that it is critical to standardize or scale the variables (using a Min/Max scaling) so as to render them Normally distributed. However, those procedures will not change the shape of the variable. They will only change its scale. So, this argument is not appropriate. I passed my criticism by the author, and he very graciously accepted them.

When it comes to the examples, they are interesting and well explained. But, they are not always replicable. I worked on a couple of chapters. And, at times I derived the same results at other times I got very different results with the same coding as his. I know DNNs can be unstable. So, that may explain some divergence in replication. However, we both started those models with the same seed number embedded in our codes. So, the divergence is puzzling. In one interesting case, he developed a DNN with a reasonably high R Square only to uncover that the underlying correlation between the model’s estimate and the response variable was negative. This seemed mathematically improbable. When I ran the exact same model, I got a much lower R Square than he did. However, the correlation was positive as one would expect.

The author generates much goodwill with his readership. He is passionate about educating and sharing his knowledge. He is readily accessible. He actually helped me out with my coding in one case and very gladly accepted my debating some of the mentioned concepts with him.

Easy reading. Practical info. I built models that work following the books step by step instructions. The references are fantastic too.
The author is easy to approach and continues to be helpful in answering questions related to the topics with rich resources.
I also got the Kindle version so I have a pocket workbook and reference on my smart phone.

About the Author
Karis is a Pacific Northwest native with a BA in English from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a few years of postgraduate work in Classics at UW in Seattle. Naturally, this education led to a career as a horseback riding instructor. She has been teaching for over twenty years and has been published in a national equestrian magazine. She lives on a small farm in Washington with a black cat, goats, and a foster horse from a local equine rescue group. She spends most of her free time reading, playing the violin and viola, and riding with friends.

Impressive

Well-written lesfic is rare. I think Ms Walsh moves immediately into a very select group with this debut. The plot is well constructed - sufficiently complex to convincingly support the development of interesting characters. Andrea and Brooke are skillfully crafted to be different, complementary and multi-dimensional. It was also enjoyable to have a researched back-story of sufficient depth and substance to add to the overall ambience - importantly, without being intrusive. I also tip me 'at in admiration of the dialogue - 10/10; the sex is better than most lesfic - although with this author's talent, I believe she has it in her to move up the scale (heh, heh) from a 6.58/10 - what's lacking is the subtlety of a more poetic sensuality - but then, I admit to being very picky.
Ms Walsh has also paid attention to her scaffolding (thank you, thank you, thank you): almost perfect editing, proofing, and no need to rely on spellchecker - it is obvious that she has learned spelling and grammar somewhere reputable.

Another great debut novel, probably 3-1/2 stars if not 4

This was a nice novel. A coming out story, which I'm still a sucker for. It just seems to give authors a strong framework for real emotion and a defined character journey. And one of the main characters, Andy, is a professional musician, which also falls along the lines of one of the things I really like in my romance novels: characters doing interesting things, like with music, dancing, other brainy endeavors that require talent, or adventure like mountain climbing or whitewater rafting. It runs the gamut, but Andy the violist is right in there, and I loved all the little details about how a viola fits into a harmony and how a musician makes ends meet. Plus the Seattle details rang true, yet weren't very heavy-handed.

So Andy meets with "October 5th" (Brooke), the bride of an upcoming wedding, and is struck by her beauty, and also how she doesn't seem like the typical focused bride, but as a master of compartmentalization she puts it behind her until Brooke approaches her. The depth of the connection they establish is unlike anything Andy has experienced, despite its immediacy, and though she feels like it's risky, Andy feels like she has to honor it. But Brooke is determined to make her own decisions and be true to her own life as well.

So there are fits and starts. It all seems authentic and genuine, though. Andy and her order and Brooke and her relative chaos just seem to fit together. And their care of each other, and emotional honesty were endearing. Plus, I loved getting carried away with the emotion of the music.

This is another author going on my watch list. She's good at characterization, portraying emotion, and meticulously constructing and sticking to motivations. This book is well worth the time to read.

engaging and sweet

I love it when I take a chance on a new author and find something so unexpectedly sweet and engaging... I really enjoyed this story. For me, it's the kind of book I enjoy most in this genre... nothing really heavy. It's agenda-free. No dead lovers. No grief and over-processing. It's just a fun little romance with very likeable and appealing characters who share some sexy chemistry.

So it follows the very ordered life of soft butch musician Andrea "Andy" Taylor who is seduced by a closet lesbian with her own kind of ordered life... but that's about all they seem to have in common, lol. Their contrasts are amusing. If you enjoy the kind of chemistry that arises from being involved with a complementary opposite, you'll like this couple.

I thought I might be put off by a coming out story like this because I'm so far removed from that myself and tend to stay clear of these man-in-tow-messes (now)... but blond and sexy Brooke turned out to be incredibly endearing... just one of those irresistibly terrible-wonderful attractions we all give into at least once...

What's more, Andy's sense of romance and attentiveness is just really sweet... one of those girlfriends you wanna take home to meet the fam... and the musical aspect she brings to this story was something really different for me. Loved it.

Next to Andy and the lovely and femmy Brooke, I very much enjoyed Andy's amusing chemistry with her string quartet and her virtuoso-neurotic pillow princess lover... this author knows how to create interesting chemistry between her characters.

I'm a little too sweet on this author to be critical because she knows what I like... overall, this story gave me scene after scene of very loveable characters who shared genuine affection for each other. Very often I felt like I was glimpsing scenes from the author's personal relationship(s). Is fictional imagination this sincere?? :)

The characters look nothing like those on the cover in my mind... I don't know why some book covers bother me so much, but they do. The characters within are far more attractive!

Quick and enjoyable read.... highly recommended easy reading.

Rarely is a book this much of a pleasure to work on, because I stopped on page after page to read and crack up at Hiaasen's sharp and pointed wit--and then be shocked by the nasty things I never knew about Disney! I just went to Disney World for the very first time ever last year, so I was curious to see what Carl Hiaasen had to say about it--and I don't think I'll be going back again!

Hiaasen Attacks Apple Pie

First of all I must admit that if I heard that Carl Hiaasen had edited the Dubuque, Iowa telephone book, I would rush out and buy it. I enjoy him because I love his humor, and because I share his environmental concerns. As a retired senior executive of a large corporation, I also have no illusions about the goals of business. We need gadflies, and Carl's buzzing about can only bring issues to the surface to be thought about and discussed. Disagree with him you may, but I see nothing wrong in presenting facts about the power and plasticity of the Disney world. Many folks want their big brother provided sanitized entertainment, and will evidently brook no criticism of the source of their pleasure. For myself I am interested to find out how yet another big business manipulates local governments and the press. It's fascinating to read how devoted fans will pay 25 to 40% more for a home because its built by Mickey and his friends, while disregarding the fact that the same guys built substandard housing in Miami. The way people are mesmerized by the fantastic plastic world of Disney sometimes scares me. Its like some dystopic future world from a science fiction novel.
I will agree that $8.95 is a lot to pay for 83 pages, but it sure is good quality Hiaasen.

Hiaasen's wit helps numb the pain of reality

Having grown up in Pinellas county Florida in the 60s it was easy to hate and be militant toward the obvious developers such as Hunt Corp., etc. In "Team Rodent", Carl Hiaasen provided me with the much-needed jolt to get over the quasi-hypnosis caused by a bunch of cuddly cartoon characters. Disney is nothing more than a corporate conglomerate that is wreaking far-reaching havoc on the environment under the guise of good family fun. Hiaasen's humor is not only welcome, it is necessary as it enabled me to get through the material that otherwise would have had me throwing up. I read this entire book on one flight and couldn't help but laugh out loud when reading about his scenario of the bull alligators in Bay Lake. People around me were giving me funny looks. It's not often a book causes me to lose control to that extent. There is a glimmer of hope offered when reading how the people in Virginia were able to thwart Disney's plans near Manassas. Unfortunately for Florida it's too little, too late. The only negative I could come up with in the book is the reference to orcas as "killer whales". A similar expose' needs to be done on Sea World. And by the way Carl: Let me know if you need any assistance with those bull alligators.

Only Hiaasen could turn Disney into the vile and soulless entity presented in "Team Rodent" and still make you chuckle. I suspect that most lucid people have had the occasional flickering thought that perhaps the Disney Corporation seemed a bit too omnipresent and omnipotent to be so wonderful, and here Hiaasen explains exactly why that is the case. To be fair, this book isn't just a roasting of the mouse, it is also a roasting of the American culture that so embraces the overcleansed Disney ideal. Hiaasen's writing, as usual, is witty and clever, and sometimes snort-milk-out-your-nose funny. Humor aside, I found the book deeply troubling because I saw so many parallels between the way that Disney and Big Tobacco run their businesses and buy off their enemies. This book will certainly make you laugh, but hopefully it will also make you think.
