Series is a for sure read

I have loved the story from the first time we set foot on the golden beaches with Kent all the way up to the forth book. There is a few surprises as we see Kent recouping from the action of book three...book five should be a greatly anticipated book. (only negative is as with most book in gen...wish were longer.)

This is a small, handy document that contains the text of the Constitution of the United States in full, as well as several other major formative documents: The Virginia Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and a collection of case law summaries that relate to major constitutional issues in history.

The book also contains an essay on the origins of the Constitution, including a brief overview of the Revolutionary War, the failures of the Articles of Confederation, the Convention of 1787, and the ratification process. After the text of the documents is a brief essay on the role of the Supreme Court and the doctrine of judicial review. Perhaps most surprising to most Americans is that the powr of judicial review is not a constitutionally-granted power to the Supreme Court, but rather develops out of the English common law tradition and the early Federalist thinkers.

This text concludes with a brief summary of major federal offices, qualifications for office and duties assigned to the offices. It also lists presidents, Supreme Court justices, lists of states with dates of settlement and entering the union, and other handy facts and lists.

Stefan Fischer studied art history, history and classical archaeology in M�nster, Amsterdam and Bonn. In 2009 he completed his doctoral thesis on “Hieronymus Bosch: Malerei als Vision, Lehrbild und Kunstwerk”. His specialist fields are Netherlandish painting of the 15th to the 17th century and museology.

Then there were people like Hieronymus Cock

Hieronymus Bosch was an artist working at a time when having a large workshop of pupils copying your works and not signing your works was common; and with forensic technology rapidly accelerating, it makes it easier to accurately date artworks that were left undated by the artist. Plus, even though his works contain a lot of protestant sympathies, he was labeled a Catholic painter in a region of Europe that went decidedly Protestant; this means that most of the paintings made by Hieronymus Bosch were either destroyed during the 16th century or were stolen, moved, lost, discovered etc. Then there were people like Hieronymus Cock, who built their careers off of labeling original works as by Hieronymus Bosch (a practice today known as forgery, and fraud). Needless to say, this leads to a problem when it comes to books called "The Complete Hieronymus Bosch" as every scholar is going to have a slightly different listing of what they consider to be autograph vs. copies vs. workshop of vs. follower of etc. and the list of autograph works is constantly changing. I get that.

Edit 4/19/2016: Just to show the difficulties and uncertainties of attribution, since this book has been published:
*The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things has been shown to be a copy by a follower, along with Removing The Stone/Stone of Folly
*A "Temptation of St. Anthony" in Kansas City, MO, long thought to be by a follower and not even listed in this book, has been proven to be a Bosch original
*the Met has offered more evidence that their Adoration of the Magi, listed as work by a follower #25 in this book, is by the master
*it has also been proven that the Hell drawing listed as D13 in the Workshop drawings section is in fact by the master.

I got this book and could not put it down for about 2 or 3 weeks because I was so mesmerized by the high-quality reproductions of my favorites Bosch works like the St. Anthony Triptych and the Garden of Earthly Delights. I also fell in love with Bosch works I had only really glimpsed at before, like the St. Julia Triptych. The text is well written, providing a nice insight into both the interpretation of the works and what we know of the works and their respective places in Bosch's timelines, but people buy these books for the pictures and the pictures truly are ASTOUNDINGLY clear and beautiful. A lot of the drawings are even reproduced at actual size or near-actual size. For the art this book contains, it deserves a 5/5, if I could give this book a 4.5/5 I would for the glaring omissions.

I was disappointed that works deemed to be by followers or the workshop were given such little attention. I'm a Bosch fan and The Conjurer is one of the major images I've come to associate with Bosch, even though it only exists in copies, the same goes with the Ghent version of Christ Carrying the cross. They are both mentioned in the list of works by followers and given a picture less than 2 inches x 2 inches, but no details and no bigger reproductions and they are completely ignored in the text. Then you realize that the central panel of the Wedding at Cana triptych only exists in copies and yet IT was given a bigger reproduction.

Also, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art there are works formerly attributed to Bosch (An Ecce Homo and an Adoration of the Magi) and 2 works attributed to the workshop of Bosch. The Workshop pieces are listed in this book as workshop pieces, but the Ecce Homo and the Adoration just aren't mentioned. At all. Period. The Hell panel of the Last Judgement in Munich isn't mentioned at all, neither are the fragmentary pieces (Head of a Woman, Head of a Halberdier) that were once attributed to Bosch.

Like I said, there are a lot of factors that make establishing a complete list of Bosch's work difficult. Since most of the works of Hieronymus Bosch have been destroyed, I'd argue that in a book called "The Complete Hieronymus Bosch" the works of the students, workshop and followers should be treated as more important than they are treated here. I mentioned the Munich Last Judgement, and while anyone can look at that piece and see that it was clearly by a hand other than Bosch's, they can also clearly see the influence of Bosch (notice how the same naked woman from the Munich Judgement also shows up in the St. Anthony panel of the Hermit Saints Triptych). In Taschen's Da Vinci monograph, they include paintings that only exist in copies or works that were only designed by Leonardo but executed by students because the list of autograph Leonardo paintings is so small. They could have done the same thing here. They should have done the same thing here.

This shouldn't be enough to dissuade anyone from buying this book with amazingly high-quality reproductions of the works of one of the most unique, enigmatic and original painters of all time; I remedied the situation by buying this and the other book that Taschen offers called "The Complete Hieronymus Bosch". The OTHER "Complete Bosch" is the 96-page "Basic Art Series" book by Walter Bosing/Walter Gibson, but includes a decent reproduction of the Ghent Christ Carries, the Munich Last Judgement, the 2 Philadelphia paintings AND the fragmentary pieces. Together, I got a really comprehensive collection of the works of my favorite artist.

In short, buy this book, AND the other book by the SAME publishing company ALSO labeled "the complete Bosch" but with a completely different list of works; then prepare to spend the next 2 weeks staring into the biblical nightmares of a pre-renaissance genius.

Just got Bosch: Visions of Genius by Ilsink and Koldeweij. It's another good supplement to get IN ADDITION TO THIS BOOK. Visions of Genius contains the Kansas City Temptation of Saint Anthony, The Conjurer, The Philadelphia and Metropolitan versions of Adoration of the Magi, The Munich Last Judgement as well as the Jackson Pollock-style paintings found on the reverse of the Heaven/Hell/Ascent of the Blessed/Fall of the Damned quadriptych; it also contains details of paintings by the workshop and followers, these paintings are given larger reproductions than in this book. However, Visions of Genius is meant to coincide with a specific exhibition, so it does not necessarily go into depth on paintings by the master that were not obtained for the show; literally, a copy of the left panel of Garden of Earthly Delights by a follower gets more attention than the original.

A beautiful edition

I love Ingpen's work with Sterling Illustrated Classics. This edition of The Jungle Book is going to be my daughter's literature book next year (3rd grade, 9 years old). This is our third volume illustrated by Ingpen. I intend to add as many of them as I can find to my kids' permanent collections.

Kipling's original jungle stories were published as serials in a magazine. They were later collected into The Jungle Book, Books 1 and 2. I have four copies of The Jungle Book, and they each have a different selection of stories in them! The Mowgli stories that most people are familiar with - from his early life until he leaves the jungle - make up most of Book 1. Each story was also published with a poem. This edition has all of the original stories from Book 1 and the accompanying poetry.

A couple commenters have called the pictures "too graphic." This is such a personal distinction that I can't really comment, other than to say that I will hand the book off to my daighter with no concern. There are plenty of drawings of Mowgli that show half or all of his naked booty. There is a picture of him tanning Shere Khan's hide. There is a picture of the Indian god Shiv. There are two scenes of animals fighting - Baloo being attacked by monkeys, and Rikki Tikki Tavi attacking a cobra. There is no gore that I noticed, nor any particularly frightening or violent images.

The books itself seems like good quality - the paper is thick, the binding is tight, the printing is crisp, and there is a sewn-in ribbon bookmark. The Wind in the Willows has held up nicely to regular, light use during school time. The two-page illustrated spreads are especially beautiful. The pictures have a very true-life feel; they aren't cartoonish at all. On the other hand, I have wondered if such so many beautifully detailed illustrations prevent the imagination from forming it's own pictures.

Overall, we love the volumes that we have so far, and we look forward to collecting more of them.

Great abridged paraphrase for younger audiences

I evaluated three series of abridged/paraphrased classics: Great Illustrated Classics, Stepping Stones, and Classic Starts. I specifically read Treasure Island in all three versions, but also evaluated the Jungle Book and other stories in at least two of the versions.

The Classic Starts version of the Jungle Book and other stories is the most complex in language and sentence structure. It's not as easy for a beginning reader to read as Stepping Stones or Great Illustrated Classics, but offers a much better story by virtue of more adjectives, adverbs and clauses in the sentence structure.

With these paraphrased versions, there is always the dilemma one faces: whether to wait until the genuine, original story is accessible or risk turning the reader off with a poor paraphrase that lacks the vibrancy of the real thing, but possibly gain the enjoyment of a classic gem much earlier than the original text would afford. In the case of the Jungle Book in particular, you also have the movie. I imagine it would be hard to follow the real story after the movie. I'm glad my kids will have heard Kiplings version before Disney's.

Personally, I bought the books intending to read to my kingergarten age children, rather than have them read. We found the Classic Starts to have by far the best versions of the stories, notwithstanding the originals which are just too long for us, in language that is hard to be understood. Since I am reading them aloud, we've forgone the simplest versions which are perhaps a bit too butchered to really stand out as the excellent stories the originals gained a reputation for. I feel that the Classic Starts are rich enough that they easily match original versions of simpler tales like The Little House on the Prarie or Charlotte's Web.

So far, with the children, we finished Call of the Wild, are half-way through the Jungle Book, and started Treasure Island. Then we're on to The Odyssey, Moby Dick and Tom Sawyer. Move over Pippi Longstockings and Amelia Bedelia! Previously we've read books like those of Beverly Cleary, the Little House series, Milne's Pooh, and Horrible Harry, besides hundreds of basically picture books (think Virginia Lee Burton, H. A. Rey etc.) The classics have a little bolder story lines, and these abridged series make them more accessible.

What a great story! I just saw the movie and the book has so much more detail

This is a wonderful all time story which had been wonderful to learn once again soon after being raised with happy memories of the story and movie. I really like the numerous heroes and the descriptive details of the interactions and also of the forest establishing the phase of the more immersive experience. About the Author

Harindra Joseph Shermal Fernando is the Wayne and Diana Murdy Endowed Professor of Engineering and Geosciences at the University of Notre Dame, with the primary affiliation in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences and a concurrent appointment in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He has received numerous awards and honors, including a UNESCO Team Gold Medal (1979), Presidential Young Investigator Award (NSF, 1986), and Rieger Foundation Distinguished Scholar Award in Environmental Sciences (2001). He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Physical Society, and American Meteorological Society and was elected to the European Academy in 2009. He serves on the editorial boards of Applied Mechanics Reviews (associate editor), Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics (editor, 1997–), IAHR Journal of Hydro-Environment (associate editor), Physics of Fluids (associate editor) and EGS Journal of Non-Linear Processes in Geophysics (editor). He is also the editor in chief of the Journal of Environmental Fluid Dynamics. Professor Fernando has published more than 225 papers spanning nearly 50 international peer-reviewed journals.

Kayla gets a concussion and Ergan finally gets her. These true mates are getting the HEA they've always wanted.

'Ergan' is the fifth book in the Winter Valley Wolves series by V. Vaughn. It's also part of the multi-author Mating Season Collection of stand alone paranormal romances and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. Written in the first person and entirely from Kayla's point of view, something I don't usually like, I was so absorbed in the story I barely noticed. I loved it and couldn't put it down.

Kayla Hayward has come home to Winter Valley after finally managing to ditch the violent and controlling ex, Gary, a year ago, and is now teaching at Winter Valley High School. The former star of the Winter Valley Girl's Varsity Soccer Team is also coaching the current team and relaxing on her dock by the lake in the evening, listening to the wolves howl and making up romantic scenarios about werewolves. She also dreams of the guy she's had a crush on since she was a junior at the same high school and now sees every day, because now he's a teacher and coach there too.

Werewolf, History teacher and soccer coach Ergan Wakefield can't really believe his luck. He thought he'd lost her forever, but his true mate, Kayla Hayward, has finally come home after five years in Boston and he's determined not to lose her again, but he's sending some seriously mixed signals and she thinks he's not interested, then the ex turns up...

I'm not going to give any spoilers, but this terrific short story has everything you could want in a paranormal romance, including some really great characters, from the grouchy next door neighbour to the wonderful Wakefield family as well as humour, a minor mystery, a little action, steamy bits and the HEA we all expect. I loved it and I really can't wait for the next one.

I'm ADDICTED V. Vaughn's Winter Valley Wolves/ Second Chance Love (audio review)

I was given an ARC of Ergan from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't wait to start this book, I'm ADDICTED to V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" & was extremely happy to find out that it wasn't finished yet. Again I was quickly drawn into the story, entranced by what was happening inside, then BAM... it was finished, leaving me wanting more.

Kayla hasn't left Winter Valley since coming back for her 5 year reunion, infact she's found a job & plans to stay... Ergan has a second chance to be with his mate, but how to broach the subject??

I really did enjoy this installment, meeting new pack mates, reading new situations... just adds more to this series. Although you can read each installment as a stand-alone, I do recommend reading them in order.

Ergan is book 5 in V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" series, which in turn is a part of the "Mating Season" pack series. A set of books from 6 authors, 6 different packs & an individuals story on finding their mate. I'm hoping that wasn't the last novella from V. Vaughn's "Winter Valley Wolves" I've really enjoyed what I've read so far & I can't wait to delve into the other authors work in the "Mating Season" series.

Q- Would you consider the audio edition of Ergan to be better than the print version?
A- I would have to say it would depend on my mood & what I was doing for the day, sometimes I feel like reading & others I feel like listening.... I enjoyed both versions equally.
Q- Who was your favorite character and why?
A- I would have to say my favourite character from Ergan, would be.... both Ergan & Kayla... Ergan because, even though he knows Kayla is his mate, he allows her to leave in the first place, but when she ends up staying in Winter Valley, he's there to protect her.
Kayla because, well she's sassy, know's what she wants, has a wicked imagination (even when her werewolf dream comes true)....
Q- Which character – as performed by Erin deWard – was your favorite?
A- Hmmm I think Kayla was my favourite performed character, Erin made her just come to life!
Q- Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
A- There was this scene that occured out on the lake, in a boat..... it was very intense, fan worthy!
Q- Any additional comments?
A- I really love this series, to be able to listen to this book has brought out bits that I missed whilst reading. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. I love the extra emotion added when listening.

And here we have book #5 and I just finished� book #6.. Ms. Vaughn has written each book so it can stand alone, which is a great read because each one is a different HEA.��
Kayla Hayward comes back to Winter Valley for her 5th reunion and doesn't go back home. Instead she becomes the soccer coach at the high school, where she lives in her parents summer cabin by the lake. Everyone tells her don't go out at night the Wolves will eat you, but really all they do is hide and howl. All she can think about is her amazing kiss on grad night with Ergan 5 years ago. She'll never forget it, it was Magic!!!
Ergan Wakefield is the high school coach. He loves his job but when he sees Kayla again he can't stop looking at her, thinking about her. And boy does he remember that kiss. He has to stay away from her, it was to dangerous to be with her. She's human and he is a wolf. I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.
