In my alternative certification class, we talked about teaching to multiple intelligences and different learners. This book defines these terms AND actually shows you ways to apply these ideas to your classroom. yahooo!!!

Okay Book

I purchased this book because I wanted specific activities I could use in my primary classroom. Half of the book's content was persuasion on why it was important to use various learning styles. I did not need to be persuaded so this was a waste for me. There are a few pages that will benefit my classroom, but not the majority of the book. If you're looking for a Silver & Strong book that will be useful, try their "Tools for Promoting Active, Indepth Learning". It's much better than this one.

About the Author
Ellie Whitney, PhD grew up in New York City and received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English and biology at Radcliffe/Harvard University and Washington Universities, respectively. She has taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, has written newspaper columns on environmental matters for the Tallahassee Democrat, and has authored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which have been revised multiple times over the years. In addition to teaching and writing, she has spent the past three-plus decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology. Her latest book is Priceless Florida: The Natural Ecosystems (Pineapple Press, 2004).

Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Good buy, but could be better...

I'm not a fan of the yearly releases of Understanding Nutrition, as they usually contain the same exact guidelines as the past editions. The book itself is an easy read, especially for being a college textbook. The diagrams and tables also make a great visual aid to go along with the text.

Just be aware that this book does not contain the media access code that most college students need along with the book. I'm not complaining, but it is a fact and might help others who are looking at buying this book from amazon and not their college bookstore. Amazon could make this a better deal by selling the media code separately or make a bundle deal with the book.

Decent..

I bought this book for my college Nutrition class...when it was much more expensive!

I find this book decent. It gives a lot of information, but I feel it actually frowns upon important current issues - promising high fructose corn syrup is 100% safe, boasting GMO food's benefits, discrediting herbal remedies/supplements and calling it "wive's tales, etc." It can also make you worry about lacking minerals and nutrients if you're a vegetarian.

Kindle version Is just like the hardcopy

I rented the Kindle edition and I am using this book for my nutrition class as part of the curriculum of addiction counseling. But it has so many interesting things that I am planing to buy it. I also have the hardcopy of this book which when finish with it I am planing to sell back. Is a very heavy book. Both books are with identical text up to now. But I prefer the Kindle edition because of the price and the ability of zooming for better reading. Unfortunate is not audiobook, like my others books on my Kindle.
By reading this book, I finally understand why I gain so much weight and has been impossible to lose it no matter what I do. Now I see foods differently and when I go to do my grocery I do smart shopping by selecting nutrient value foods.

Meanwhile, his nephew, Abe Townsend, couldn't care less about family allegiances. Led by an anonymous publicist, Abe and the remaining displaced members of Harvest Baptist Church gain notoriety when news reports garner an outcry of sympathy and support.
What should have been a simple unification of two churches has turned into something much more complicated, and it will take plenty of faith to hold it all together.

"A Tale of Two Pastors"

Willie Green and Vanessa Morton Green are the pastors at Pleasant Harvest Baptist Church. They are not only co-pastors but they are husband and wife. When Alexis Montgomery, a reporter, comes asking questions about the fire at Harvest Baptist where Willie was once the head pastor, the temperature begins to rise. Soon After by Sherryle Kiser Jackson is a journey through the fire to find out why would anyone want to burn down Harvest Baptist. Along the way, Willie and Vanessa began to see each other in a different light.

Abe Townsend took Willie's place at Harvest Baptist before the fire. When Willie left the church, some of the long time members followed him to Pleasant Harvest. Abe tried to do his best to fulfill the needs of the parishioners but he was missing a very important part in being a shepherd of God's people. The interview Alexis did on the Easter Sunday fire brought attention to Abe as well. Both pastors had a reason to get rid of the church, but did either one of them strike the match? Would Abe and Willie both be cleared from arson charges?

Soon After is a combination of two of my favorite genres, Christian fiction and mystery. I tried my best to figure out who was responsible for the crime. Ms. Jackson carefully gave little clues. The story did move a little slow for me in the beginning, but eventually picked up and I kept trying to figure out the culprit. I recommend Soon After to readers of Christian fiction and mystery.

More like 3.5 stars.... It felt like I'd missed some history with the characters...

The author made her characters flawed and real. They struggled like everyone else in this world, and weren't protected just because they were Christians. The bummer was I felt like I'd caught the story midstream and that the foundation had been laid in an earlier book that I hadn't read. Regardless, I appreciated the insider's look into the church hierarchy and how things were run. I loved how the author had her characters face temptation and deal with issues related to pride, fear, the temptation to lie, etc. I always enjoy a good story with realistic players.

The cultural elements in this book are very strong. Having visited a number of African American congregations over the years I felt very comfortable and familiar with the structure of the church and the way services were portrayed. I also loved the way Vanessa was forced by circumstances to relinquish control of her life and let God do the work He had intended. I can't say more than that because it would be a spoiler.

I enjoyed reading about the arson investigation and getting to know the reporter, Alexis, from the news station. Those investigative scenes all felt real, like I was there with the characters. The mystery elements and her drive to solve the case kept me reading...along with Vanessa's mystery illness. I love it when things have a twist on them, as long as the conclusion is believable. In this case, the author did a great job with that part of the plot. I also get the impression from the way things ended that there may be another book to conclude the series.

Soon After, is Sherryle Kiser Jackson's follow up novel to Soon and Very Soon. Soon After picks up where Soon and Very Soon ends. Even though this was a follow-up novel, I was able to read it and follow the storyline without the benefit of having read Soon and Very Soon. The story picks up after the destructive fire at Harvest Baptist Church, and reporter, Alexis Montgomery is determined to get to the real cause of the fire. Ms. Jackson did an excellent job telling the story without one having to wonder what happened in the first book. Soon After gives us a gives us a glimpse into the lives of Pastors Willie and Vanessa Green. Their lives are full of twists and turns. I hope Ms. Jackson bring Willie and Vanessa back for another installment of this series. This is a must read, and you will not be disappointed.

A Poor Effort from the OMG

I passed my UML Fundamental Exam using this book as my main text because it was recommended for this exam. But it was a far harder effort than it needed to have been.

I dislike this book for its lack of clarity. In particular:

1) The translation too often leaves you puzzling. Here is one example including surrounding sentences for context.
"The entire activity terminates as soon as a token reaches a final node regardless of how many other tokens are still within the activity. Several incoming edges that have only one of them must transport a token. As soon as a token is made available at one of the edges the final node is activated and the activity terminates".

What does "Several incoming edges that have only one of them must transport a token" mean?

2) Statements too often are wrong. An example is a discussion on p111 about include and exclude relationships that reaches the wrong conclusion.

3) Too many figure and diagram references are incorrect. Try to find Figure 2.6.2: it is really Figure 2.122. Figures 2.54 and 2.55 are the wrong way round.

4) Primitive Data Types are defined as: 1) Integer, 2) Boolean (you have to search for this one because a typo puts it with Integer), 3) Unlimited Natural. It is a surprise to find in the answer to a question on Primitive Data Types that String should also be included.

Great for Language Geeks, not for those trying to learn UML

2. Who this book is NOT for.
3. Who would benefit from this book.

1. UNIQUE
Unlike all other books I have seen on the Unified Modeling Language (UML), this book neither attempts to assist the reader in learning the UML, nor does it attempt to assist the reader in applying the UML. The reader will, of course, learn a great deal about the UML. In fact this book provides a detailed and methodical explanation of the UML meta-model, and may very well be the only book to do so (the only other source for this information, that I am aware of, is the UML Specification itself).

2. NOT
As stated above, this book does not assist the reader in learning UML. Most books introduce a small number of notation elements, explain them, and then add to that in a graduated fashion. This is like reading an I-Can-Read book, where core vocabulary is used over and over again, and new words won't be introduced until one picks up the next volume in the series. UML 2 Certification Guide is like reading a text about grammar principles that is written in the language itself, thus command of the language (in this case UML) is expected at the outset.

Don't bother looking into this book unless you are already familiar with UML notation, especially UML Class models. Most (if not all) of the notation gets explained eventually, but attempting to follow the presentation with only this text as a guide would invite unnecessary frustration. There are many good books available to learn the UML. Use one of those for that purpose.

Some people might be looking for practical advice on how to use the notations they have learned. This is decidedly not the book for you. There is no attempt to demonstrate application beyond the detailed example of the UML itself. Books on methodology exist; these generally depend upon your purpose. Are you a Business Analyst or a Software Engineer? The right book for you is out there, but this isn't it.

3. BENEFIT
I enjoyed this book. I first learned about the Meta-Object Facility (MOF) when reading Model Driven Architecture and Ontology Development, by Gasevic, et al. I have read multiple books that explain how to read or apply the UML. Speaking as an ontology geek, a book that provides a detailed meta-model for the humble lifeline is really cool. So, if you are interested in learning about the UML meta-model, or are already familiar with UML notation, but want a deep-dive into what makes the UML a formal language, I can easily recommend this book.

I would like to recommend this book more broadly. The purpose of the book is to prepare for UML Certification (the OCUP). Unfortunately I have never seen a job announcement that mentions OCUP, and requests I have made in professional groups about the utility of the OCUP have been ignored. I can only assume the OCUP is unknown and unused by the general software engineering and business analysis communities, so reading this book for its original purpose is unlikely to have a professional payoff.

Good book, but ...

The book is a good guide to the exam. This book helped me to get the fundamental certification. However, I believe that sometimes the reading is quite boring. After the exam I realized that some subjects are not (good) covered in the book. I felt the lack of exercises to practice the concepts as well. Finally, a few tips to help us understand some concepts would be useful. People interested in obtain certification should read this book and practice some mocks on the Internet.

Cary L. Mitchell, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology. A licensed psychologist, he has been conducting preemployment psychological screenings of law enforcement applicants for departments throughout California for over 25 years.Edrick H. Dorian, Psy.D., ABPP, is a Police Psychologist with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and a clinical psychologist in private practice. He is board certified in both Clinical Psychology and Police & Public Safety Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, and a diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.
