Great insightful book

We all know that door to door sales are about as tough as it gets. If you are looking for a great guide in helping you implement an effective door to door sales program, this book is a must read. Very insightful on the process and how to execute a solid system for your sales team. No fluff. Best book on the subject.

YA-- A remarkable biography of a young woman who at the age of 14 became the working and sexual slave of her widowed Missouri master. After bearing two of his children, and falling in love with a fellow bondsman, Celia tried to sever the sexual relationship with her enslaver. He raped her; she killed him while try to defend herself. She was convicted of murder and hanged at the age of 19. McLaurin has masterfully researched judicial, historical, and contemporary materials in preparing this compelling and thoughtful narrative. Enhanced by its sensitivity and brevity, this book is a provocative starting point for discussion of its many ethical, legal, historical, and social issues. It should be required reading for high school students.

Both a well-told historical narrative about a slave girl sexually exploited by her master, whom she later kills, and a thoughtful examination of the moral tensions that strained the fabric of the antebellum South. McLaurin teaches history at the Univ. of North Carolina. At the age of 14, Celia was purchased by aging and prosperous widower John Newsom. On their way back to his Missouri farm, Newsom raped his new ``possession'' and from then on treated her as his concubine, impregnating her at least three times. Celia endured her master's attentions for years, until she became involved with a fellow slave named George and demanded that Newsom stop. He refused and Celia struck him with a club. The blow proved fatal and a terrified Celia disposed of his body in her fireplace, a crime that was quickly discovered and brought to trial. McLaurin relates Celia's story in vivid prose, using her trial to bring in the larger issues confronting both the South and the North in the 1850's. He writes not only of the slavery question, but also of legal issues (``Antebellum southerners viewed their slaves as both chattels and persons, a paradox reflected in the legal systems...'') and of the role of women--black and white--in a white male society (``One of the essential legal differences between slave and free women was that free women were protected from sexual assault by law''). McLaurin's chronicle is tightly focused, with no great--but many small--illuminations, and his style is succinct and meticulous throughout. A weak story with a powerful context

The most powerful think about this book is the context that it puts a story in. The book can feel like a lot of speculation at times and can go into details that seem unnecessary but the way the book carefully points at its limited sources and makes educated guesses is part of the nature of what it is doing. You can google the story of the slave Celia in Missouri and think you have an understanding of her story but that doesn't do her or history any justice.I liked the book for the historical picture it painted -it was fascinating to see how almost everyone involved in Celia's trial had served in congress, or how connected the trial was to the ongoing Kansas-Nebraska prelude to the civil war. The book is very good history and well and carefully crafted but in the end only a few pages per chapter were actually dedicated to Celia specifically. For someone well versed in American history, then, the book was more about connecting one small story to a larger picture than learning about a complex group of people in a complex and specific part of Missouri.

In the end I felt like I didn't know more about Celia when I started the book then when I finished. I felt as if I knew more about exactly how and where we learned the facts about Celia's case and story, but I couldn't find real relevance or real significance. The book was a portrait, I feel, not a statement or argument. It is a very good portrait but I don't feel it was an engaging piece of history.

Should it be read? Absolutely. As a way to begin engaging with slavery, a slave society, and a historical Missouri in general the book is perfect. However, if you are looking for something more than an introduction, or some way to further grasp the horrifying past of slavery or to learn about an extraordinary woman you might read something else. I have no doubt that Celia was an extraordinary woman but that doesn't come through in the book. What comes through is that she lived in an extraordinarily volatile time and that we have extraordinarily little information on her -and less on the thousands of other in her situation. I came away from the book questioning how little I know more than feeling like I knew or understood more -a valuable experience but not what I was hoping for when I picked up the book.

CELIA ,THE SLAVE Brings a Forgotten Slave into the Light

This riveting and slim book tells what it can of the story of Celia, a slave whose tragedy played out in rural Missouri in the 19th century. As he gives us Celia's story, McLaurin clearly explains the history of slavery in Missouri and how it intertwined with the national politics of slavery. Reading the book for that alone is well worth it.

A Missouri farmer buys Celia from an owner whose name is still unknown. The evil of Celia's new bondage is cruelly and fatefully enforced, even as she and her new master travel back to his farm. What happens to her from then on is a reflection of all the evils of slavery. And the fact that there is so much about Celia's life and her identity that cannot be recovered is one of those very evils.

Not to be missed!

I had to read this book for an online History of Missouri class for Mizzou. I was reluctant to read it--who, as a kid, hasn't heard of the terrible ordeals slaves had to endure? Who hasn't had to read about slavery and abolitionists and Frederick Douglass? I thought it would be the same old thing.

I was pleasantly surprised; the author does a fabulous job setting up the historical setting, and shows an appreciation for ALL of the thoughts and feelings of the time period. I was VERY impressed at the author's objectivity--it is easy to get sucked into 21st century pity or anger or blame.

The front and back covers of the book make this seem a bit more like a dramatic story, but it's a very detailed historical account that gives wonderful insight into antebellum Missouri and slavery.

Notes from the early 1800s on the ancient star constellations

This book was a pioneering work by an English lady on the star constellations. This is a fascinating book of her notes and discoveries on the beliefs of early civilizations about the original 48 star constellations. The first constellation was The Virgin, sometimes referred to as "the virgin who will conceive." (Remember that Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus.) The second constellation was sometimes called The Desire of Nations. It showed a young male child being held by the Virgin. The ancient Jews and Arabs said that the meaning of the original 48 constellations were explained by Enoch, and that they told the story of God's plan for mankind from beginning to end. This book is basically notes on the meaning of the constellations. If you like this book, there are others that you will also want to buy, that explain the "Gospel in the Stars" in more detail.

Even though some have criticized this book for its content, I, on the other hand am very happy with it. It is one of the most thoroughly researched manuscripts of its time. It expanded my horizon and caused other ideas about the universe to make sense.

I took a chance and ordered this textbook, even though it was only .59. I was sure that I would recieve it and it would be completely unusable, maybe in like another language or something. I mean, who sells a hardback textbook for .59?! However, I received the book promptly after ordering and it was everything promised!

please, no more "hallmark" monsters, or Deniro either for that matter

I really wish Steve Niles would try and persuade Bernie to give his monster a haircut, I really really do. Some clodhopper shoes would be nice too, but the haircut is a MUST! Who does he think this "monster" is, Cain from 'kung fu' ? I was a die-hard frankenstein NUT, and I loved the Shelley book and the first two universal movies, I liked the TV movie with Michael Sarazan also. But that guy who played the monster in the "Hallmark" TV movie irritated the hell out of me, (worse than irritated, BORED me) and THATS what Bernies "monster" is beginning to remind me of. He needs to think more on the lines of the Dick Briefer comic and not at all on the lines of the Hallmark movie monster, this would make MYSELF happy anyways. Sure, the monster wanted company, and he had been wronged by everyone, but self-pity is boring. Karloff understood. Karloffs genius lays in giving the monster just the smallest note of pathos, with a major helping of hate and vengance. Kirbys early Hulk comic was inspired by the Frankenstein monster
It has always been my contention that if they wanted to make a perfect Frankenstein project, they need to visualize the monster from "Bride of Frankenstein" going through Mary Shelleys story, with the monsters dialouge far more in lines with Karloffs interpretation than with Shelleys. This is my feeling on the subject

Emerick was a fresh-faced young engineer in April 1966 when producer George Martin offered him the chance to work with the Beatles on what would become Revolver. He lasted until 1968, when tensions within the group, along with the band members' eccentricities and the demands of the job, forced him to quit after The White Album, exhausted and burned out. In this entertaining if uneven memoir, Emerick offers some priceless bits of firsthand knowledge. Amid the strict, sterile confines of EMI's Abbey Road studio, where technicians wore lab coats, the Beatles' success allowed them to challenge every rule. From their use of tape loops and their labor-intensive fascination with rolling tape backwards, the Beatles—and Emerick—reveled in shaking things up. Less remarkable are Emerick's personal recollections of the band members. He concedes the group never really fraternized with him—and he seems to have taken it personally. The gregarious McCartney is recalled fondly, while Lennon is "caustic," Ringo "bland" and Harrison "sarcastic" and "furtive." Still, the book packs its share of surprises and will delight Beatle fans curious about how the band's groundbreaking records were made. (Mar.)

Emerick was only 15 when he began working with the Beatles as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road Studios. Later, as a 19-year-old full engineer, he was on board for the seminal Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Always aiming for perfection, the Beatles never took no for an answer, and he did his best to oblige by developing innovative recording techniques, some simple (e.g., using a loudspeaker as a microphone), others more sophisticated. Being the Beatles' engineer wasn't entirely pleasant. Eventually, during the tense and uncomfortable White Album sessions, the Beatles barely spoke to one another without anger, and Emerick quit before recording was finished. But he returned to work on Abbey Road and several McCartney solo records, including Band on the Run. Fascinating Reading, Though Not Without Issues

Geoff Emerick’s “Here, There and Everywhere” is a fascinating book for any Beatles fan and I would recommend it, though it is not without its problems. Emerick had the opportunity to be the proverbial fly on the wall pretty much throughout the entire Beatles recording odyssey, starting initially as an underling in the early sessions and eventually becoming the recording engineer by the time of the Revolver sessions. He quit early on in the making of the White Album, amidst the well-documented acrimony in the studio, but later returned for Abbey Road.

It’s clear that Emerick has a pro-McCartney bias. This is partly due to Paul being more friendly toward him than the others right from the beginning. But it's also because he holds the opinion that McCartney was the "pure musician" of the group. Given McCartney’s proficiency on bass, fingerstyle acoustic guitar, lead guitar, piano and even drums, it’s hard to argue with that. However, Emerick also holds a dim view of George and Ringo as musicians, and it should be noted that others, such as Beatles engineer Ken Scott, had a much higher opinion of the talents of the latter two than does Emerick and have flatly stated their disagreement in that regard. Of course, as someone who was there, Emerick is certainly entitled to his opinion.

It should be mentioned that McCartney is not always presented in a flattering light either. Emerick notes that he was driven and could sometimes be overbearing to his band mates. He was even testy and bad-tempered at times, like all of the Beatles, in the group’s latter years. Meanwhile John comes off in the book as very talented but moody, impatient, somewhat lazy, and often high as a kite in the studio. He could be incredibly sweet and charming, according to Emerick, and sometimes very angry and nasty. Based on what we now know, that’s probably fairly accurate.

Where this book shines is in the descriptions of the recording process. From about 1966 on, the Beatles were searching for unusual sounds--a guitar that didn’t sound like a guitar, for instance--and it was the job of the engineer to figure out how to make it happen. Fortunately for the Beatles, Emerick was young and experimental and willing to break the steadfast EMI rules about how recording was to be done, which often landed him in hot water with the administrative higher ups. While George Martin was a gifted producer and orchestral and vocal arranger, it’s clear that he relied heavily on the engineers to satisfy the Beatles’ demands in their quest for the ultimate sound. Fortunately for the Beatles, Emerick was there to help through most of it.

Emerick is clearly very enamored of the Revolver/Sgt. Pepper period. The White Album that later followed in 1968 was such a wide departure and so different from the 1966/1967 period, perhaps this is why (incredibly to me) Emerick finds the White Album to be virtually unlistenable. Or perhaps it’s because he worked on it very little and thought he could have done it better. Either way, I’ve always felt it was a fine and diverse album, though again he is entitled to his dismissive opinion about it.

There is lots of interesting recording minutia scattered throughout the book. For instance, we find out why the alarm clock rings on “A Day in the Life” and learn that it was pure serendipity that it ended up dovetailing nicely with the “Woke up, fell out of bed” section in the middle. Working within the limitations of four-track tape recording, Emerick helped pioneer much of what we now take for granted in the greatly expanded digital recording world and it’s interesting to see the process unfold.

As for the breakup of the greatest band ever, Emerick actually goes pretty easy on Yoko, though he notes the tension and disruption her presence clearly caused. By 1969, as Emerick saw it, the Beatles were basically going in different directions musically--and in personal life--as well as growing sick and tired of one another amidst the clash of egos.

All in all, this is a fun and interesting read. I recommend it to any Beatles fan. You may find yourself in disagreement with some of his opinions, and there are some occasional factual issues, but this book really helps illumine the recording process of some of the most iconic pop/rock music ever produced.

But if you want to know what they were like in studio

A tremendous look at the Beatles and their music from a production standpoint. If you're curious about the Beatles' lives outside the studio, you may want to look elsewhere. But if you want to know what they were like in studio, and how they and their engineers came up with their unique sounds, this is the book for you. Packed with tidbits ranging from the teenage girl stampede that energized the record of She Loves You to Geoff Emerick almost electrocuting John Lennon by trying to plunge a condom-sheathed microphone in a bottle of water to Yoko in a bed in the studio, this book covers it all. After I read it, I went back and listened to the entire Beatles archive with new ears.

Puts you in the studio and the recording room with the Fab Four

An insightful read, places you right in the studio and recording booth with the Beatles in their prime and sudden decline. Emerick is one of those rare witnesses to musical history who tells it straight and doesn't make themselves the center of the story. He tells his role, plain and straight, and teaches a lot of the technical aspects of shaping music alongside the Beatles. He also gives a window into the band's dynamic, witnessed first hand, very straightforwardly and with no added drama. I respect Emerick's account of the band very much for this. A highly recommended read.

Enjoyable story

Upfront, the story has a HEA ending and is a welcome addition to the Thornehill Springs series. It is a sweet romance between widowed mom Ariel and Psychologist Mathias (Matt) Poole. Matt not only appreciates Ariel's subtle beauty but he is smitten with her daughter Dani. Throw in a censoring and critical mother-in-law and you have a recipe for drama. The author carefully deals with the issues of loss and lingering bereavement as seen through the eyes of several characters. Not to give anything away, I found myself pitying and understanding the former mother-in-law's controlling behavior. She could have been any mother after losing a child. Even Matt's father finally comes to terms with his own loss. Don't expect the characters to willingly confess their undying love for each other. Matt had commitment issues and Ariel had no desire to make him feel trapped. Matt, however, had other ideas; he was in it to win her heart and to protect his new family. I do recommend this book as an enjoyable read.

The story was sweet and nicely written

Lydia Rowan has again written an enjoyable read. The story was sweet and nicely written. While I have enjoyed some of her previous stories in this series more, I was not disappointed with the third installment. Both H & H were likable. I received an ARC for my honest review.

Here we are the two of us together

We both know that we shouldn't be together. This is what comes to mind for Ariel and Matt. Matilda added the extra stress that only a bad in law could. Yet the precious Danielle is what binds. This is a story of second chances, forgiveness and grievances.

Monumental work, if you know the subject

David Nicolle tends to be biased towards the Mid-East (ie: all good things in the Middle Ages come from Asia), but he manages to mostly leave his biases out in this monumental work. If you are looking for a pretty picture book, or an introduction to the topic, like various Osprey books, this ain't it. What it is a look at surviving pieces, iconography, statuary, and literary referrances to present a comprehensive look at what arms and armour of the period are recorded. Definately more for the serious enthousiast than the casual reader.

A giant book of drawings with brief info

Upon opening this book you find that it is not really a book but a giant catalog of drawings of archealogical pieces many of which have nothing to do with arms or armour. Each has a brief description and if you wish to see the line drawing of the item described you must continually flip to the back of the book. Besides these short descriptions, actual text amounts to probably only 15 pages throughout the book. Not very informative overall.
