A European woman who assumed the persona of a young male Tunisian student describes her remarkable journey into the Sahara in colorful and textured, albeit romanticized, vignettes. In 1897, Isabelle Eberhardt (The Oblivion Seekers, not reviewed), born and raised in Geneva, traveled with her mother to Tunis, where both converted to Islam. Eberhardt spent much of the rest of her life in Algeria; this work comes from notes she made during 1904 as they were later edited and published in France by Victor Barrucand. Despite this cleanup of the notes, some intriguing internal tensions remain: Eberhardt says her male persona (which Arabs respected, even when they saw through it) allows her to travel without attracting notice, but in a low moment she notes that she attracts disapproval. Near the Algeria-Morocco border, she muses with some pleasure that nobody knows precisely where the boundary is, yet soon (in one of the few hints at the region's volatility) she trades her Moroccan attire for Algerian to avoid annoying residents. When individuals and settings attract her eye she describes them vividly and concisely, whether she is passing a madman reciting verses from the Koran or taking tea with male students at a mosque. (Her garb ironically restricts her access to--and ability to learn about--women; interestingly, she seems not to mind.) Her observations on the play of light and color over the desert are made with an artist's eye, and her musings on travel and isolation reveal a pensive side. Yet far as she journeys, literally and metaphorically, she is still dogged by her prejudices: Jewish women cast ``provocative leers,'' and Jewish men possess ``insinuating and commercial abilities''; blacks can be ``repulsive'' and, when dancing, both ``childlike'' and ``barbarous.'' Eberhardt Shines Even Through a Sabotaged Translation

This volume of Isabelle Eberhardt's original Dans L'ombre Chaude de Islam "In the Warm Shadow of Islam" was penned in 1904. As a big Eberhardt fan I still enjoyed reading this slim 1993 edition although it's lamely billed "In the Shadow of Islam". Translated by Sharon Bangert, the omission of this single word from the title, "Warm", quite neatly reverses its meaning. Thus the translator or publishers (Peter Owen Publishers) chose to slyly sabotage Eberhardt's empathic sympathetic message about her chosen faith Sufism/Islam with a beckoning yet ominous tang. I suppose her original title, 'In the Warm Shadow of Islam', (emphasis mine) was too long and Islam-friendly for today's market?

Thus, the publisher's choice perpetrates the ever popular anti-Islamic bent. That said, it's the brilliance of Eberhart's work that manages to shine through even a biased translation.

"To the extent that I feel myself saturated by ancient, unshaken Islam, which here seems to be the very breathing of the earth...And I understand that one could end one's days in the peace and silence of some southern zawiya, end in ecstasy, free of yearnings, confronting only radiant horizons. " pg 114

"I have jotted these reflections in the margin of a letter...Having written them, I relapse into my feeling of exile, wishing to bury myself even deeper in this hostile south, without any desire for the Paris I have known, where the newspaper's lip-service to feminism was even more repugnant to me than the Parisian coquettes.

I have said nothing in my response worth reading. Why bother? One day paths separate, destinies crystallize. And this is so much more than having made a few friends. When they are good enough to invite us to share their foreign happiness, let's show them what's possible to a true fraternity of minds.

Let's regret nothing, since our happiness and theirs will consist in letting ourselves go one day, into mysterious currents which will carry our souls adrift towards impossible shores. Then we'll enjoy the intoxication of decadence and shipwreck; and wandering over the immense beaches of the night, we'll feel within us the seeds of suffering begin to germinate." pg 70

Today is my first time to open this textbook after taking it out of packaging and down the middle the whole back is not even glued onto the pages anymore. This is not some wear and tear, this is a major problem because I have to be extra careful not to turn a page too hard or it will unglue even more.

neatly sketched vignettes of inventive engineers

Professor Billington presents a neatly sketched vignettes of engineering pioneers in America. The book is well illustrated and the engineering calculations readily accessible to the lay reader. My interest while reading _The_Innovators_ was rather uneven -- some chapters seemed far more engaging than others, but this may have been a consequence of greater familiarity with some technologies compared to others. Nonetheless, the short biographies put human faces behind many of the technical innovations we take for granted today. Too much contemporary reporting focuses on either political intrigues or scandal. As Jean Henri Fabre observed "history records the names of royal bastards, but cannot tell us the origin of wheat." _The_Innovators_, by contrast, presents a compact distillation of modern engineering that would benefit the technically trained and the lay public alike.

not quite as good as the sequel

This book is part of a planned series on the history of engineering in the United States. As such it's pretty remarkable for just existing. Most people seem to think that engineering is just application of formulas, and that anybody with a calculator would come out with the same answer to any particular engineering problem. Billington attempts to show that this is not so, and that certain key engineers have essentially created the modern world of today.

However, this book (planned to be the first of four) is not as readable as book two (Power Speed And Form). I think the problem can be demonstrated in the section about steel. In order to describe steel, he first goes back to the process of creating pig iron, then describes wrought iron, and finally the Bessemer process for steel. Then he highlights Andrew Carnegie for taking the Bessemer process and turning steel into a commodity (that he mostly controlled).

This is just a much more disjointed story than, for instance, the story of the invention of the telephone or the airplane in the second book. Even though this book is called "The Innovators", very few of the people he highlights made the kind of individual breakthroughs that the Wright Brothers made.

Perhaps this book should have been called "The Adaptors", as it really was mostly about engineers in the US adapting technologies pioneered in England and taking them well beyond what the English had done.

This reads like a college textbook -- informative, detailed, and something most people will not read unless it is on a required reading list. In contrast, the second book read more like something from The History Channel, with more of a purpose of making it enjoyable to read as well as being just as informational.

Practical Genius

I have always been eager to learn as much as possible about those who are generally considered to be the most creative thinkers. In this book, Billington discusses several of them such as James Watt, Robert Fulton, Samuel F.B. Morse, Andrew Carnegie, and Thomas Alva Edison. What makes this book even more interesting and informative is the fact that he also discusses many others about whom I previously knew little, if anything. For example, Thomas Telford ("the designer as artist"), Francis Cabot Lowell ("no one played a more central role in bringing the industrial revolution to the young United States"), J. Edgar Thompson (among the first inductees in Fortune's "Business Hall of Fame, together with Ford, Edison, and Morgan), and Henry Bessemer (determined how to manufacture malleable iron and steel without fuel, thereby permitting mass production). Because of what these and other "pioneer innovators" accomplished during the 19th century, the United States emerged as the world's leading industrial nation. "The emergence depended...upon a series of major engineering events: the steamboat, the textile factory town [e.g. Lowell, MA], the continental railroad, electric telegraph, the iron and steel industry, the steel bridge, and the incandescent light." Moreover, Billington includes all manner of graphic illustrations of major inventions and explains how that engineering "has transformed not only the material life of our nation but also its politics and its culture." In Chapter 3, Billington suggests three competing ideas about the origins of technological innovation: "one, of innovation as a consequence of applied science; two,, of innovation as a response to political and economic forces; and three, of innovation as the result of individual genius." Billington succeeds brilliantly in helping each reader to understand the creative thinking and the achievements of various engineering pioneers "who made America modern" as well as the origin(s) of their technological innovation.

About the Author

Although she began by writing fantasy, Nancy Kress currently writes science fiction, most usually about genetic engineering. She teaches regularly at summer conferences such as Clarion, and during the year at the Bethesda Writing Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In addition, she is the "Fiction" columnist for Writer's Digest magazine. She has won two Nebulas and a Hugo, and lost over a dozen more of these awards. Her work has been translated into Swedish, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, among others.

good practical advice on fiction writing from a pro

This is part of the Writer's Digest "Elements of Fiction" series (presumably the previous incarnation of their current "Write Great Fiction" series). This book is thus a kind of counterpart to James Scott Bell's Plot and Structure. Whereas Bell approaches the subject as a college tutor might, analyzing classic plot structures and using diagrams to illustrate the rhythm of a story, Kress's approach is more down-to-earth. It's also a shorter book. (I see the two approaches as complementary.) As the title implies, she looks at these three parts of a novel or story and offers clear advice about what each needs to accomplish and how to go about it.

A key idea running through this book is that the beginning makes a promise to the reader: not about exactly how the story will turn out, but about what kind of reading experience it will deliver. An interesting middle builds on that, and a satisfying ending delivers on the promise.

When I read this book, I got a solid picture of what Kress as a writer thinks about as she works on a story and (to a degree) how she works. There's interesting discussion about whether or not to revise the beginning and perfect it before moving on, and always an eye toward the reader (or editor) and what they will need to see at each point in the piece to make it work for them. For this reason, Kress puts a spotlight on the very beginning (opening lines or paragraphs) and very ending, since these are places that will sink and entire work if they're not effective. When talking about middles, she addresses the common experience of feeling stuck or overwhelmed by a writing project.

A refreshing feature of this book is that Kress frequently gives advice tailored to the short story form, not focusing exclusively on novels as many writing books do. This is important because in many genres, short stories are how beginning writers learn their craft and begin to market their work.

Because the focus of this book is not narrowly on plot per se, but about "beginnings, middles, and ends" as an organizing frame for teaching how to write well, it can serve passably well as a one-stop book on fiction writing. There's information here on dialog, incorporating detail and exposition, establish setting and tone, etc.

This book has the feel of talking with a working writer about what works and what doesn't; she uses only the abstractions and concepts she needs to make the point. Someone looking for a clear, readable orientation to the craft of fiction writing will be well served by this book.

Invaluable!

This book, along with "Plot" by Ansen Dibbell and "Description" by Monica Wood are my favorites of the "Elements of Fiction" series by Writer's Digest Books.
Nancy Kress gives a clear and concise guide to keeping your momentum going when beginning a novel or short story. She offers practical advice on most, if not all, areas of fiction writing (e.g. characterization, plots, style). Best of all, she does all of this in an encouraging manner that makes you believe you *can* get through and eventually write the story you've envisioned in your mind.
I find her approach extremely helpful and as a result, I ended up buying her book on "Dynamic Characters" as well. I only wish she could write more fiction technique books!

How to turn an okay manuscript into a winner

I read this book when I was revising a manuscript. Nancy Kress shows how to make all the parts of a novel connect to provide a satisfactory reading experience. Her section on endings was particularly strong, and helped to transform my last page from merely so-so to five paragraphs that sum up the message of the story in a powerful and readable piece of exposition and dialogue. This book is ideal if your unruly story is escaping from your control, or if it doesn't deliver its message with the power you know it could. Helpful for the beginning novelist who needs assistance shaping a story as well as for the experienced novelist who wants to increase his or her mastery in the craft of writing.

Growing up fast in wartime!

Since I lived through the occupation of Denmark myself I can verify the authenticity of many of the changes depicted in ordinary danish peoples lives as a result of the occupation. The book was well written, with the mind to address young peoples interests .I was 7 years old when the occupation began and 12 years when it ended. The danish jews (approx) 8000 were rescued and brought to safety to neutral Sweden by the Danish population,who hid their neighbors in homes, hospitals, nursing homes, in churches and many other facilties, until arrangements could be made to sail them to Sweden. About 400 were betrayed and sent to( Theriesenstadt a getto were the Germans promised luxury appartments to the unaware ) however the Danes sent many busses with care packages during the war and went down themselves to make sure their friends and neighbors were treated well. RED CROSS was very helpful also. A gem! Amazing experience with middle-school Special Education students.

My Special Ed middle-school students have a hard time reading; some of them can't decode well enough to read grade-level text, and others can 'read' but can't understand what they read. The General Education 7th-grade students were reading a different book about the Holocaust which was way too difficult for my students, so I sought out an alternative for my Intervention Language Arts group. I remembered loving this book when I was in school, and its reading level (around 4th/5th-grade) was more appropriate for my students, so I ordered copies from Amazon.

At first, the kids were not excited to read historical fiction. But soon, even the reluctant readers were begging to spend more time reading instead of doing the vocabulary games they usually prefer. One of the students usually avoids reading at all costs, but was so enamored of this book that I gave him his very own copy to keep, and he told me, "This is the best book EVER!", and then ran off yelling to his friends, "Ms. So-and-so just gave me this awesome book! You guys've gotta read it!" Music to a teacher's ears.

Before we started the book, we did a short research writing unit to build background knowledge; students could research Denmark or the Holocaust. Then, as we read, it was so neat to see the excitement on their faces as the book mentioned things they had discovered in their independent research, such as King Carl X riding his horse around the village, the Six Days War, the importance of fishing as an industry in Denmark, and the Danes blowing up their own navy rather than letting the Nazis take it. They said, 'Now I know why you wanted us to research that!' and some even asked to go back to their research sources to learn more.

The book also spurred great discussions, many initiated and led by the students: discussions about social justice and whether obeying the law or caring for others is more important (it was fascinating to watch a very inflexible, rule-bound boy with autism come to his own conclusion that disobeying a bad law might be okay in some circumstances), why parents sometimes hide information from their children, differences between Judaism and Christianity (yay, they really do understand compare and contrast diagrams!), what it means to be courageous (in which a very quiet girl realized she had shown courage when she resisted peer pressure-- not an easy thing to do in 7th grade), why wars begin and how they end. This was the most effective reading experience we had all year. Too bad the book isn't longer!

A really good read!

I'm an adult and this book is meant for 5-7th graders but I loved it! A teacher friend of mine was talking about it over dinner and said that he had been readying it to his class and he got so into the story that he couldn't put it down. His original plan was to read it for the first time along with his students but he finished it the very first day (he didn't tell the kids). Anyway, I don't want to ruin the story for anyone who wants to read it but it's sooooo worth your time even as an adult. Obviously easy readying but packed with historical events, suspense and a reminder of the horrible trials some cultures have had to endure to to dictatorship. I would recommend this to everyone!
