About the Author
Darrell Max Craig is a highly regarded teacher of many of Japanese martial arts, and a pioneer in their development in the West for over forty years. He holds multiple black belts and is a U.S. Kendo champion, leading the U.S. Kendo team to the world championships. In 1973 he was awarded the title of Shihan, or Master Teacher. Among his many books on the subject is the widely praised The Heart of Kendo. He lives in Houston, Texas.

excellent book on mugairyu iaido,but i think photo,s would have helped with understanding the kata more easily,i do understand the reasoning for figure drawings!

Terrific Read!!!!!!

I began reading another book by this author "Japan's Ultimate Martial Art... Jujitsu Before 1882 The Classical Japanese Art of Self- Defense"; I enjoyed the book so much that I looked for another book written by this author(Darrell Max Craig). I found the book "Mugai Ryu...The Classical Japanese Art of Drawing the Sword" to be complete; in the sense that he really pulls you back into the time period of fuedal Japan when the sword was the weapon of the Japanese warrior. It brings a sense of reading a history novel, a fantasy (as in I was swept away within this book), but mostly real application of the sword. Everything was explained in his very down to earth way, which I so appreciated. This book was another great find and worth every cent. I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in the Japanese sword.

I lived in Houston, Texas at one time. I was never a student of Mr. Craig's, but having in an interest in the martial arts, this is how I came to know about Darrell Craig's dojo and his books. He is well know and respected in not only the Houston martial arts and law enforcement communities, but he is well known (and quite credible) in the writing and television communities too. He is well know for his festival appearances and relationships in the Japanese community. I have enjoyed all of his previous books and this one is certainly the best.
What Mr. Craig writes in his books is apparently basically what he practices. No one disputes Mr. Craig's over thirty years of experience. He makes it very clear in this book about Mugai ryu that (while the reviewer from the Netherlands disingenuously does not), there are as many as five different claims and several different "soke's" to the one all true form of this type of Japanese swordmanship called Mugai ryu. So, apparently any claim to "authority on Mugai ryu" is an immediate contradiction.
Also, as far as I can tell, Mr. Craig does not claim that this is a history book, and I don't know anything about Japanese history to care enough about a several year mistake. Of course the movements are different in the book than the movements practiced by others worldwide, Mr. Craig did not learn and does not teach the movements of this particular reviewer from the Netherlands. I think the reviewer's one-star review was less of a review and more of a commercial.

I can't practice the beautiful and fascinating art of Iai, but at least I can read about it from Mr. Craig's book. He consistently provides fantastic glimpses into an art form that most westerners find absolutely mysterious. Six stars.

I like the book, not only was the recipes and directions for the fondue recipes spelled out in easy directions but suggestions of what would be good to dip in each recipe was included. Plus if a recipe mentioned a dipping sauce those recipes were included as

Dr. Madura has served as a consultant for international banks, securities firms, and other multinational corporations. In addition, he is a former director of the Eastern Finance Association and a former director and president of the Southern Finance Association. He earned his B.S. and M.A. from Northern Illinois University and his D.B.A. from Florida State University.

This book is approriate both for absolute beginners and for people looking for a more in depth explanation of finance. It covers many topics, including calculating your net worth, creating a budget, mortgages, insurance, and taxes.

The included software is very useful, allowing you to record your financial situation in printable spreadsheets.

Decent book; poor Kindle version

The content of the book is pretty good. It's actually more about improvising theory than "exercises" as such, although they can be used as exercises. More of a quibble, that doesn't detract from the value of the content. These will probably improve your playing if you work at them. The part about modes and scales is actually quite good.

The problem is that the Kindle version is one of the worst things I've seen. The music examples are incredibly tiny and can't be enlarged. They are so small that some of the lines on the staffs disappear. The little notations for fingers and shifts are illegible. Seriously? That's some of the most important information for figuring out the intent of the exercises.

Secondly, for almost the same price as the bound book, the Kindle version lacks any kind of audio. No CD (which is included in the price of the bound book). No MP3s or any other audio files.

Many of the language books in Kindle versions come with audio files, so we know it can be done.

Bottom line, the bound version is probably worthwhile, but avoid the Kindle version like the plague. It is totally useless.

I'm giving it two stars because I made the mistake of buying the Kindle version. Maybe more stars if I had had the bound version.

What to Practice When I'm Practicing

I've been playing bass for a long time, and one of the things I always struggle with is what to do when I'm practicing. I have a few exercises that I can recall from various teachers, but playing the same things over and over again can only help me progress to a certain point.

I like Patrick Pfeiffer's other books and his approach to teaching bass, so I picked up this book specifically because I wanted some exercises to practice on my own. I was pleasantly surprised to see the hand and shoulder stretches, and I love the modal content. Patrick combines the technical and musical aspects of playing bass into single exercises, which makes practicing much more enjoyable and helps you progress much more rapidly as a bassist. For each exercise, there is an easy-to-follow musical notation and tab, and for most (I think all) of the exercises past the third chapter or so, there is a track of Patrick playing the exercise in question on the accompanying CD. It's easy to figure out how to play each exercise and then use a metronome to play it at the appropriate speed.

At the end of the book, Patrick lays out the ten essential elements of a good practice, which is exactly what I need. He sets out to provide the groundwork for a challenging practice session, but leaves it up to you to choose the specific exercises. I think this is a wonderful book for any bass player that is looking for practice tips that will help hone all aspects of his/her bass playing.

A Mother of excercise books

This is an excellent exercise book that will help you become a better all-around bassist. Patrick Pfeiffer knows how to break down elements of playing - scales, chords, groove - and he tells you how to structure your practice routine to address each element, and then combine them in a meaningful way. Go straight to Chapter 14 - it has a blueprint for your daily exercise routine right there! Before I started taking lessons with Patrick I was literally spinning wheels - not really knowing what and how to practice to get better. The lessons - and this book, which very closely follows what Patrick teaches - made this easy. Starting with proper warm-up for both hands separately, through "light-touch" techniques and economical playing (no unnecessary hand movements!), through knowledge of scales, modes and arpeggios, through proper groove and rhythm, through different styles - to actual music-making. All in one practice session! This is very rewarding, I must tell you. Now with this book I no longer have a feel that I just spent an hour-and-a-half playing F major scale up and down at different speed - exercise became so much more productive.
Great job, Mr. Pfeiffer! Waiting for the next excellent book!

Rich Cameron is a cofounder of Pasadena-based Nonscriptum LLC. Nonscriptum consults for educational and scientific users in the areas of 3D printing and maker technologies. Rich (known online as “Whosawhatsis”) is an experienced open source developer who has been a key member of the RepRap 3D-printer development community for many years. His designs include the original spring/lever extruder mechanism used on many 3D printers, the RepRap Wallace, and the Deezmaker Bukito portable 3D printer. By building and modifying several of the early open source 3D printers to wrestle unprecedented performance out of them, he has become an expert at maximizing the print quality of filament-based printers. When he's not busy making every aspect of his own 3D printers better, from slicing software to firmware and hardware, he likes to share that knowledge and experience online so that he can help make everyone else’s printers better too.� �

3D Printed Science Projects addresses the “We Bought It, Now What?” problem of 3D printers. Each chapter starts with a science or math concept and then provides a model for you to print. So, in the chapter about Gravity, the science about the orbit of Haley’s Comet around the Sun is discussed. Then they give you the actual software code to make an orbit model. Pretty cool.

The authors use the free software openSCAD. Don’t be afraid. I was, but the online documentation for openSCAD turns out to be good. After spending not much time using the software, my rookie fear is disappearing.

Encouraged, I’ve decided to make the model that explains light waves. The supplied code works fine and I’m happy to say that the 3D printer is happily 3D printing.

One last important meaty note is that once you have a model working in the software, the authors suggest how to easily manipulate the variables for different effects. After you start doing that, the creative juices start flowing.

I respect this book. It does exactly what it says it will, with economy. Expect to be challenged, to have to think, and to be inspired. With a strong will and this excellent guidance, you can and should succeed.
