Not a "Shop Manual"

I expected more -- a lot more -- in the way of engineering details and less about the history of the Mossie. I already own books on the history of the aircraft, which is why I purchased this "Shop Manual." The title is misleading -- this is no shop manual. While it certainly makes for interesting reading cover to cover, I was disappointed by the paucity of detailed technical information. To wit, I was interested, in particular, about the construction of the spars and the engine and undercarriage mounting structures. Alas, all you see are a few photos and thin descriptions, which have left me disappointed. I did not purchase a "shop manual" to learn about the history of the aircraft and its legendary crews. That's what history books are for.

Knowing the Mossie from the inside out :)

Most know of the de Havilland Mosquito as the “Wooden Wonder” due to its making of plywood but that is not the why of its wonder. Simply put it was the SR-71 “Blackbird” of its day since it was almost immune to being shot down as it flew higher and faster the opposing aircraft during World War II. Mosquitos flew several reconnaissance missions nearly daily, both high as well as low, gathering photographs or other information. But de Havilland’s almost never happened design performed other missions almost equally as well whether those missions were bomber, pathfinder, fighter-bomber or intruder.

Falconer and Rivas have produced this book which pierces the myth and derivative hyperbole surrounding what is perhaps World War II’s premier aircraft — an aircraft which saw a low combat loss rate but did not have as many examples survive long after the war, unlike its metal-made brethren.

The authors note that the Mosquito’s design began with the catching of a pike (the fish) by no other than Winston Churchill. The pike was mounted on the wall of a loo as a distraction for men who found themselves in a pondering position. One such was de Havilland designer and thought the model a fast aircraft after the lines of the sleek and quick fish. The designers then went against current thinking in two significant departures: the purposeful omission of defensive armament (and its parasitic drag as well as weight penalties) and being built if wood (actually six differing woods). The British Air Ministry was less than impressed though calculations showed the aircraft would indeed be much faster than fighters of the day.

De Havilland persevered, as we know, but how and why was the Mosquito so successful? The authors have written this definitive book explaining just that — from the Canadian Spruce made wing spars, to the nearly 30,000 brass screws in the wing assembly, to the fuselage made in separate halves (easing installation of instruments, hydraulics and cables), to the rigid adherence to streamlining with the pilot sitting just ahead and to the left of the second position (the bombardier or radar operator depending upon the aircraft version) in order to save a few inches of fuselage width (remember Churchill’s pike!).

The detail of research is impressive — such as the engine nacelle extensions solving the original tailplane buffeting difficulty as well as fighter versions have a flat windscreen as compared to a split windscreen on all other versions. There is so much more with special sections devoted to descriptions and manufactured of all the major assemblies.

So much is learned from the authors’ insights. Previously mentioned was the wooden construction which is so well known but what is less known, unless reading this book, is that men and women in seemingly nonmilitary manufacturing industries were employed in making this machine designed for war. Coachmakers as well as furniture makers became vital in Britain’s war effort making them a force multiplier instead of redundant.

Falconer and Rivas go into detail regarding the variety of companies as well as skills used. The Mosquito’s history is also well illustrated including specific missions to underscore the points requiring underscore. The high altitude missions to incredibly precise low level strike missions are well described. Indeed, reading of the extremely low level missions arriving on time and on target delivering their ordinance would have today’s attack pilots with smart bombs admiring their work.

Prior to joining the faculty at Campbell University, he spent twenty-five years in various positions at Revlon, including director of quality control and assurance.

Being a professor of pharmaceutics in a pharmacy school, I am delighted to own a copy of "Integrated Pharmaceutics" book! It is becoming a "to-go" reference for most of my lecture material, and I am glad to provide a review of this book.

I would like to acknowledge the authors for writing such a comprehensive book which serves as a great resource for anyone in the field of Pharmaceutics. This book is a unique compilation of current topics taught to undergraduate as well as graduate students. "Integrated Pharmaceutics" offers various topics from physical pharmacy, biostatistics, pharmaceutical dosage forms and regulatory science. The book provides practical problem solving exercises, case studies and various references, which are helpful for the reader.

I hope this review serves to be helpful for my peers who are looking for a resource with such unique yet comprehensive compilation of topics.

Excellent comprehensive resource !

This book is an excellent comprehensive reference or study guide for those in pharmaceutical industry or student of pharmaceutics. The contents are organized so well and inclusive, it extensively covers the basics of preformulation, product design ( formulation) and regulatory science, which is an extremly important part of the pharmaceutical industy. A Great book !

A fine first novel.

This book got off to a strong start, with good character development and a compelling premise. For the first half, I could hardly put it down as the story line propelled me along.

Where my interest began to slow was in the second half, where the story became fantastical to me. I think Draper's idea was to have the reader consider the absurdity of organized religion, its rituals and its beliefs about what constitutes a good life. I also think he was drawing a not-too-subtle alignment between dogmatic religious practice and mental health. If this was indeed Draper's goal in the story, he made his point, although somewhat awkwardly. Draper clearly did a lot of research on religion and mental health, and occasionally goes a little overboard to convince the reader that he knows his stuff.

The afterward and Draper's blog (johndraper.com/blog) give a wonderful insight into his thinking, his life and the inspirations that created this fine first novel. And reading both helped me truly understand the novel and the novelist.

"A Danger to God Himself" got me thinking, which is a good thing. I recommend this novel and look forward to more from Draper. I hope his next book comes soon!

I loved this book

I loved this book! The characters and narrator have unique, vivid voices that caught me up and made reading this book so very satisfying. I was immediately sucked into the story and couldn’t wait to see what happened next. You see Jared slowly succumb to his psychological demons. This causes Kenny to transform from a shallow, self-centered young man who has never examined his life and faith into a caring man who sees the world in his own way, contrary to how he was taught to simply accept unquestioningly. You see him find love and the value of emotional intimacy, something completely unknown to him in the past. He questions and challenges, while looking for a sign of God’s existence – and ultimately finding something more real and vital to his existence. Definitely recommend this book.

John Draper’s irreverent approach to spirituality is nothing less than downright refreshing. His unique debut maintains a nice balance between the holy and the profane from beginning to end. Offering his audience an intriguing and provocative read, A Danger to God Himself is perfect for those who appreciate reading about hypocrisy in organized religion while at the same time are doing a bit of soul searching. Comes highly recommended!!

This book ended too soon for me.

I loved the story told by a 14 yr old boy and his perception of what was happening in the world around him. The relationship with his grandfather Rucker was so important and special for his life. I found myself feeling envious of the camaraderie found within the community of Cold Sassy Tree even though they had their prejudicial narrow belief systems. The community still had a deep sense of love and commitment for each other. Grandfather Rucker was not only important as grandfather but as a patriarch for the whole community. I was amazed that he was supposed to be old at 54 years old. I guess they figured age different around 1900. Anyway his thinking was progressive for the town and being a leader he was an agent for change whether they (his family and the town) wanted to or not. I enjoyed the book immensely and was sorry it ended.

Look out for Grandpa

I liked this book but I do think the characters could have had a bit more depth. Will, the young man telling the story, is a typical teenage boy who pulls teenage pranks, but he is very in tune to his grandpa, who loves him like the son he never had. Will likes to gossip and makes up crazy stories about people, especially his aunt Loma. The old deep south language is sometimes a bit frustrating to read but this is how they spoke in the 1900's. This story is about family and the love that a family has for one another. Grandpa is the force behind the family and he is a very colorful character. He does what he wants, says what he thinks, and always gets his way. I'm a ripeness ia all kind of reader and this book called to me when I saw it on the shelf. So I ordered the Kindle edition. I have to admit that the first chapter was off-putting. Partly uneven tone. Partly a certain preciousness. But I persisted and the second chapter was better as were the following chapters. I was hooked.

There are occasional difficulties in the author's decision to narrate the book from a first person point of view, that POV being a fourteen year old boy. Two scenes turn on Will Tweedy overhearing highly intimate exchanges between his Gradnfather and the Grandfather's much younger second wife. These do test credulity.

That said the amazing strengths of this novel more than compensate for these lapses. The setting: a small town in Georgia in July of 1906; the characterizations; the inventive plotting are simply amazing. Will Tweedy's vernacular use of language is a delight not a distraction.

Humor abounds as does what Henry James called "felt life." I came to care about these people in a way that seldom happens for me. I wonder what they're doing now as if they were people I had known and loved. The only other book that did this for me was The Makioka Sisters.

I finished this book last night. I missed my Pilates class to finish it. That's how good this book is--because I really like Pilates. But I like this book more.

The aim of this book, accordingly, is to is to present a systematic outline of the logic of Boolean equations, in the hope that Boole's methods may prove useful in solving present-day problems. Two Logical Languages Logic seeks to reduce reasoning to calculation. Two main languages have been developed to achieve that object: Boole's "algebra of logic" and the predicate calculus. Boole's approach was to represent classes (e. g. , happy creatures, things productive of pleasure) by symbols and to represent logical statements as equations to be solved. His formulation proved inadequate, however, to represent ordinary discourse. A number of nineteenth-century logicians, including Jevons [94], Poretsky [159], Schroder [178], Venn [210], and Whitehead [212, 213], sought an improved formulation based on ex� tensions or modifications of Boole's algebra. These efforts met with only limited success.

Not Just a Book for Women

I told myself upon receiving this book that I would read it slowly, savoring it like a well-aged Port. Well, forget that idea. I guzzled this book like light beer. It was so, well, me. I believe one of the keys to really enjoying this type of literature is finding a deep connection to the author - that the author is someone who you think, "I could hang out with this person for an evening." Mid-way through this book I told my wife and a good friend. "Shauna is the female version of me."

While I don't write half as eloquently as Shauna, I think I've shared her sentiments about food, hospitality and joie de vivre on multiple occasions - around tables, cooking with the guys in my cooking club or even, on occasion from the pulpit. So, I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you love food, hospitality, cooking, wine and just-for-the-fun-of-it dinner parties; if your idea of a great night is a house full of people and a whole afternoon spent cooking and smiling as you anticipate your guests; if you love having people in your home; if your idea of a good dinner is one that lasts several hours; if you love to give a good toast - to lock eyes with the people you love across a candlelit table and tell them why they're important to you; if you believe that everything is spiritual, and maybe especially food; if you love a well crafted sentence and rich metaphor, then this is your book.

My only argument with this book is some of the early reviews I've seen. To quote one, "this is a wonderful book for women" For women? I'm not a woman, and I loved it. Why, in the Christian world must we keep perpetuating the notion that men write serious books about theology and leadership, while books about food and hospitality and sucking the marrow out of life are somehow "women's lit?" Or that the gift of hospitality is somehow a "woman's gift," and the serious gifts of leadership are for the guys. Yes, Shauna writes about motherhood, childbirth, and getting into her bathing suit come summertime. But, somehow, she does it in a way that I can connect to - after all, I'm married to a woman and I've heard her talk about all those things. And even if I were not, I'm still interested, there are still parallels to my life. While my shame issues aren't related to my "underbutt" (a term I've never heard before this book!) - I've got plenty of "swimsuit" issues in my life. And, there are plenty of us guys out there who love to throw a party - who care about candles, music, a well-set table and making a great soufflé, who love to employ our words, knife skills and ability to make a killer salsa, as gifts to the people we love. So, let's be done with this silliness. I don't think Shauna intends for hospitality to be a "women's issue," and you shouldn't either.

Feels like talking to a friend!

I am an unabashed fan of Shauna Niequist. I fell in love with her writing the first time I read Cold Tangerines. I've since read that book multiple times and have lent it to several friends. Bread and Wine, though somewhat of a departure, as it did focus primarily on food, is written in a similar vein. The chapters are vignette style and each are followed with a recipe that featured somehow in the vignette. I tried to savor it slowly, but I ended up gobbling them quickly. Some were sweet, some were savory and some required a pause between bites.

I don't know Shauna, but through her words I feel like I do. She shares her heartaches and joys and presents them all with a vulnerability that was so relatable. I wish she was my sister, my neighbor, my friend. I've come to understand that she can have quite the fabulous life, but you know what? She never once name drops or rubs in it your face. She enjoys her life & lives it to the fullest with humility.

I am not an advanced cook by any means, but this book has given me courage to try. I love how she tied this in with the kitchen and food and family.Get in the kitchen, get messy, create something fabulous, create something not-so-fab, just try it. And the same goes for life - be present, get messy, be glamorous - just be there. Don't be a bystander in your own life.

I read this on my Kindle (it was on sale & Shauna Niequist - so, duh, I HAD to buy it, haha), but I will definitely own a real copy of this book.

The book is not just about the food. It's about the gathering. The loving. The savoring. As I hosted guests this week, and as we dined with good friends tonight, I found my mind returning to Shauna's reflections on life lived around the table.

Great read with warmth, love, and deliciousness wrapped into it.
